    Hello,

the drum bearings on my Hotpoint WD51 are making a crunching noise and there is slight up and down movement of the drum relative to the drum casing. I am a ‘DIY white goods tinkerer!’, I’ve successfully replaced the bearings in an old hoover washing machine and our backup Electra 1000A but I’ve never tackled a washer drier and anything with a plastic drum casing. Does anyone have any advice regarding the method with this machine?

    thanks.

We don’t go into ‘blow by blow’ instructions, we assume some level of competence. 😉

Basically though its front panel off, rear back panel off, split the outer drum front from the main outer drum and then follow your nose.

If the drum has as much play as you say it has and the bearings have been failing for some time then not only will you have great difficulty in removing the main, front bearing in one piece but it is highly likely that the drum support shaft/spider and even the outer drum bearing housing will be damaged.

I would attempt to strip it down first before you order any parts, it has a very high probability of being BER. 🙁

I was fearing that! That’s what finally saw off my tough old Hoover. The movement is very slight, hardly visable more of a noise so hopefully I’ve caught it in time?

Suck it and see, you should find several online videos of Hotpoint bearing changes, although the washer dryer one is more involved than the basic Hotpoint WM range it is based on.

    Have fun.
