Machine is only 14 months old but has developed an intermittent long or short spin cycle, i.e sometimes it works fine and other times it does not spin at all even with nothing loaded, so eliminating unbalanced drum. Chosen speed of spin seems irrelevent. I believe this machine has a filter built into pipe from drum to pump motor, I will check this.

    Has anyone any other ideas?

Not an easy one to diagnose from this distance, could be intermittant/broken wiring contacts, control unit faults, motor TOC etc. That machine was first manufactured in 2002, are you sure it is only 14 months old? If it has an FHP motor as opposed to a GDA motor it is less likely to be a motor fault.
Be sure to remove the plug before you ‘open the box’

1st thing you should do is check the carbon brushes in the motor, when they start to get to short you will find the do not make contact with the armature when in spin, eventuaky you will lose all drum action
