ParticipantHi,
I hope someone can help. Went to what I think is a Hotpoint WD 640 integrated – never seen one like it, no branding, just WD 640 on dispenser drawer. Was showing F20 and not draining.
Quick check of filter reveals that’s blocked, easy job I thought. Unblocked filter and hoovered up loads of sawdust from under, around and on top of machine from kitchen fitters. Pushed back into place and put on test spin, everything appears fine for a minute or so until there’s a huge “crack” and flash from behind the filter housing. Machine carried on regardless, I pulled it back out and checked all connections, meggered heater and motor, both are fine. Machine seems to be working so assume it was just a bit of sawdust, job done.
Called back today because it exploded again, fuse gone so replace that. Hoover inside machine in case there’s any sawdust in there. With some trepidation test again, nothing pump/drain on spin, put it onto wash and fills for about 5 seconds then another big “crack” and flash, this time near water inlet valves, and fuse gone again.
Module appears to be absolutely fine, sent to EMW to be checked though. Is there anything else I should be looking for? Never came across this before, just very annoying that what should be a simple clearing the filter is becoming a nightmare!
Thanks in advance for your help.

If I was you I would be looking for a “chafed” wire

WD640 is a bog standard, free standing machine. 😕
Worth checking mains filter.

Thanks. Checked all the wiring for anything obvious, it’s all cable tied very tightly but otherwise seems okay. The fact the “explosions” appear in different places, seemingly actually at components, make me think something else must be up.

I know :?. As I said, never seen a machine like it, it looks very much like a WMA drum, but with large square module mounted front right, very simple controls (just 4 buttons + programme dial), plus LCD display. No branding whatsoever on anything, inside or out. Means getting parts for it is very difficult. Thanks for the tip about the suppressor. Will try and see if I can one, although it’s a bit funny too – not standard, plastic push fit plug at the front, with spade connections to machine behind it. It’s mounted sideways.
Thanks for all your help – as I said, it’s certainly an unusual one for me… especially for the fault to occur after cleaning the filter. I’d hate to BER it as I suspect customer blames me somewhat – not that I blame them as I can’t tell them WHY their machine has started exploding all of a sudden!

A couple of pics might help. I don’t know of any Hotpoint machine that doesn’t have the name on the front.
I do know of lots of machines that aren’t ‘Hotpoint’ that still have it on the front though. 😥

Haha, too true – as I’ve had to explain to many a customer as I’ve BERred their 14 month old sealed drum 🙁I’ll try and take pictures next time, would have done it this time only already felt stupid enough not being able to tell them what the fault was.

The F20 is intriguing though. I have just had a call about a Hotpoint WT965.
Complaint of no spin and display showing F20.
The fault codes only go up to F18 though. :con:

I would guess it might be h20 and not F20 and most likely be a fill valve at fault, ive had a few leaking and blowing. JJ

Fault code was definitely F20, without a doubt. Code hasn’t reappeared since filter emptied so I’d assume it was indicating failure to drain.

My customer also insists it is showing F20, not been out to it yet though.
She also mentioned that they moved the machine to do some plumbing work and got a shock from the cabinet. 😯
Would a dodgy earth in the wall socket cause no spin or spurious fault codes on a 3 phase machine?
BTW johnnyj, is there an integrated WD640, nothing like it shows up on Partfinder. ❓

Going out to this tomorrow, she has just rung back to say it is actually showing F02. :rolls:
