I have a Hotpoint wd71 that has generally been very good
Lately after a wash there has been a burning plastic smell and also bits of dark grey melted plastic which I am presuming (after investigation) is coming from the dark grey hot air inlet vent as it has witness marks from where I think the drum is catching it.
The light grey door seal is also getting chewed up a bit
When I spin the drum by hand the clearance between the door seal and the drum varies from 10mm to almost zero. The drum doesnt apper to be out of ballance though! When it spins it sounds ok and doesnt throw itself about. Also main bearings sound good and have no play!
Does this sound terminal?!?!
Thoughts please before I throw in the towel and order a new machine

Either something has got caught between the inner drum and front drum plate or I would imagine the internal drum spigot has cracked causing the drum to distort and wobble. Though the latter is associated with loud knocking noises on high speed spin as a rule? 😕 A new drum spigot, bearings and seal kit (Part no 1611166) is the cure.

Had a further investigation last night. Bearings are absolutely sound and no grinding noises
Did a bit of measuring of the drum opening apeture and it has become slightly eliptical, presumably from a heavy uneven load!?!
It is enough though to make the drum edge foul the door seal and hot air inlet
You ever heard of this before?
Is a new drum a cost effective repair on a 7 year old machine?

Drums either get distorted for the reasons I have already mentioned. If the spigot were at fault, then fitting a replacement should allow the drum to go back into its original shape OK. One further thought on that theory, at the point where the drum rubs closest, is one of the 3 drum paddles immediately adjacent I wonder?

A Spigot/Bearing Kit costs around £35-£40 and the Drum costs around £50, fitting costs on average about £50 -£60 (?)
