A few days ago, I purchased and installed a Hotpoint Washer Dryer WD860P, Serial Number 42145112.

All appears to be OK with the functioning of the machine, except when the drum is building up in speed for a rinse or spin cycle, at which point the motor emits a whining / droning noise. As the drum speed increases to the full 1600rpm, the noise seem to decrease.

The machine is not overloaded in weight and is quiet during the oscillating wash cycle.

Do I have a problem with the machine, which I should inform the supplier/manufactuer about, or is this normal on this model of washer/dryer?

Should the machine be ‘Super Silent’ as quoted by the Hotpoint literature?

Hope you can help, as I want to avoid unnecessary engineer visits.

These machines do have a new design of motor so it will sound different to your previous machine. I would suggest you go back to the shop where you bought it and ask if you could listen to a showroom display model to see if it sounds the same. You may need to take a pile of dry towels to use as a dummy load.

    Re: Hotpoint WD860 Motor Whine

Unfortunately, I purchsed the machine over the internet, and it was delivered straight from the Hotpoint Distribution warehouse, so I doubt a high street retailer will be interested in helping me out.

I have called the Hotpoint Information Helpdesk. The lady I spoke to (after consulting with her colleagues) stated that the noise was ‘probably OK’.

If anyone else has the same model, can you plese let me know if the whine is normal (or not).

I would like to resolve this issue quite quickly, as the supplier will accept returns for ‘replacement as new’ or refund within 28 days. I would prefer to go through this route rather than waiting for a breakdown and having to accept a repair.

    Thanks
