ParticipantI have had no end of trouble with my Hotpoint WD860. Now the latest problem is that the Dryer does not work. Even after 3 hours the items are still as wet as they were when they were put in. There is no error indicated.
I am fed up with this machine and if this is going to be an expensive repair then I think I will just get a new machine (NOT Hotpoint).
Does anyone have any ideas as to the likely cause of the problem?
Thnx

It could be a broken wire or a faulty dryer element, fan or TOC, the dryer assembly on this machine is all Indesit unfortunately. Remove the mains plug and the top. You may be able to see any broken/loose wiring. After that you will need an electrical test meter to check the elements etc. If you do not have such a thing or the expertise to use it, try the link below to see if we have someone who can help.
Worth mentioning that the whole dryer assembly was completely modified on these machines after date code 39 ( the first two numbers of the serial number on the door)Remember that you do have a five year parts warranty, don’t chuck it out before then, you ain’t going to buy a new machine for the £90.00 labour charge it will cost if you do get Hotpoint out.

gggggrrrrrrrrr
wouldn’t it be nice if merloni (hotpoint/indesit/creda) read throught these forums?
their machines are simply poor arent they?
99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure the fan will have come loose in the dryer, and the t.o.c will have tripped out because of no airflow, refitting the fan and making sure the collett is tight and resetting the t.o.c at the front usually works, since hotpoint introduced an updated fan unit, then made it obsolete in a very short period of time…
grrr.. frustrating isnt it? how soon before people stop buying them and hotpoint becomes another fallen giant?
plug out if your gonna work on it remember – safety first

They do…… (Hello Brian). Doesn’t do any good though. They’ll even be paying researchers and focus groups to analyse the commentary running in these forums. No doubt they will conclude that they have nothing to worry about as the public are sheep who know nothing and care less, so long as it’s cheap…….

Yup.

There is no Hotpoint – only The Indesit Company – AKA Merloni.
Just my personal opinion of course.

Thanks for the input. I have checked the thermal cut out and it is open circuit…. so I guess that needs to be replaced.
Heater looks ok at about 40 ohms.
I will need to check the fan (although there is no significant noise from it.) as per helo_75’s notes.
Any other idea’s as to what can cause the thermal cut-out to go ?
Also .. I have looked on a couple of spares sites and cant locate the part – any clues ?
Thanks for all your trouble.

I refer you back to my original post. If you have not had the modification done on your machine and it was made before date code 40 then you will continue to have this problem until you have the modified dryer box kit fitted.
The TOC is part number 1605160, an e-mail to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk will get you one but in view of what I have just said it will not carry any guarantee.
Other causes of TOC failure are faulty, sticking fans, blocked heater box, switching the machine off in mid cycle whilst hot etc.
The above modification does stop constant TOC failure. The Heater box is part No: 1605320 around £45.00 + vat. Not an easy DIY fix.

theres probably no noise from the fan, because its probably jammed!! like i said the nut comes loose, the fan slips down the shaft and stops the motor from turning.
common fault that, just refit it.. usually works
althought the modified fan unit cures it, that particular problem still reoccurs

Iv got the same problem but cant seem to find the solution.
1. Iv replaced the thermostat the resistance across the pins is 24kohms. Both the new one and old one measure the same resistance so Im assuming they are infact ok but please let me know if this is wrong?
2. Iv tested the heating element and it reads 46ohms across the connetions which shows its not open circuit. During drying cycle the voltage to the element is 68volts but not sure if this is correct.
3. The fan is spinning and I have removed the whole assembly and dont remember the fan being loose.Iv had a good look around and cant seem to find anything. I’m just woundering if it is the element as there is volatge going to it but it does not heat up.
Some help before my wife kills me!!!!!!! 😥 😥

You are getting your TOC mixed up with your thermistor. The thermistor is the temperature control device, it usually has two very thin & flimsy wires going to it and should read around 24kohms. The TOC has two much thicker wires going to it and should have virtually no resistance. If you didn’t have to open up the heater box to change it then you have changed the thermistor which would appear not to be faulty. 😥
Once again and for the last time in this thread I will reiterate that if the first two digits of your serial number are less than 40 and you have not had the modified heater box fitted the only ‘long term’ solution is to do so.
Must also add that we do not advocate live testing, there is absolutely no need.
