ParticipantI’ve got a Hotpoint WDM73 that has started playing up. There is obviously a problem with the controller.
It does one of the following (though now seems to have settled down on the last one):
It won’t let you select a wash programme (the info bubble just keeps saying ‘Select Programme’),
It will let you select a wash programme but won’t let you start it (pushing the start button does nothing).
Slight variation on the last one – it will let you select a programme but rather than starting it goes through a cycle of beeping three times flashing on part of the LCD that looks like a shower head when you press start.
The display goes crazy flashing lots of random characters no matter what button you press.Either way the wash or dry programmes won’t start.
It is not giving any error codes. I’ve checked the water is getting through. Cycled the power. Trying resetting by holding the start button down (I read that somewhere on here).
Any suggestions gents?
Is there another factory-type reset for the controller?
If I was to replace the controller any idea of a price?
Thanks for any help in advance.

The control module is around £65.00 + vat, the power module £85.00 + vat. Not the sort of things to be changing without making sure they are the cause of the problem. It could be caused by sticking push buttons, this can happen if something has been spilled down the front of the panel, bad connections or tiny breaks in the flexible circuit, a very delicate, thin sheet of copper tracks that connects the control module to the push buttons and display module. Be sure to remove the mains plug if you intend to investigate. The flexible circuit must be handled with great care, if you can see any obvious creases on its surface it may be faulty. After checking all that it could still be a faulty module.
This is what the flexible circuit looks like.
In view of the cost of the parts that could be involved it may be a good idea to see if we have someone in your area who can take a look at this machine, try the link below if you decide to do so.

Thanks for the info – very useful. Having a look at the machine the flexible cable does seem to be damaged. However – my wife misinterepreted “contact an engineer to get it sorted” into “go and buy a new machine” and spent £300.
I might still see about getting it fixed though. Thanks again.

If she only spent £300 on a washer dryer then you would be well advised to get your old one ‘sorted’. 😥
