    Hi, any advice gratefully received.

I needed to replace my EL 1205 J5 drive belt for my Hotpoint Aquarius WF321 as it just broke. I phoned my local parts place and confirmed that they had a replacement belt ( EL 1205 J5) but when I got there he said he’d made a mistake and didn’t have one. He gave me a EL 1196 J6 instead and said he’d had 30yrs plus experience so it would be fine.

Then I got home and it wouldn’t fit. I know it’s always difficult and tight but I found out that the 1196 J6 is both shorter and fatter than the 1205 J5 (1196mm versus 1205mm and six grooves versus 5 grooves wide) that I needed. I phoned back but they insisted that it would be ok. Are they in the right or are they just shining me on to avoid refunding me? I want to do this by the book with the right part because if (ok when!) the machine breaks down again in the future I don’t want to wonder if it was because I had the wrong belt. What do you guys think?

    Many thanks, Dom.

You must ONLY fit an EL1205J5 for your machine.

Thanks guys, that’s what I thought. Just needed some more back-up for when I go back to the shop coz they fobbed me off once already…they seem nice enough though…I can’t decide whether they are trying to help or taking the P….unfortunately this is what you get when you try to support your small local independent shop instead of paying half the price and getting zero hassle on ebay.

    Oh yea??

I recently looked up an electric shower on fleabay, the top rated seller, ‘The Shower Doctor’ wanted over £100 more for the unit I was interested in than my local Screwfix depot.

You are just as likely or even more so to be sold non gen spares as gen on E Bay as anywhere else. you could of course have obtained one from the shop at ukwhitegoods.

    HERE 😉

Hi iadom, yep fair enough, you’ve still got to shop around I guess. I was more referring to small independent local shops though.

RE the belt you linked to. Are you sure this is the right belt? The WF321 isn’t mentioned in the list and it doesn’t say its an EL belt? If it’s right I’ll get it…

    Thanks again!

    Re: Hotpoint WF321 belt query

EL refers to the belt being electrically conductive and all the models listed for that belt require the belt to be so.

Ah, I thought it stood for elastic! Duh!

Anyway, I got the right belt in the end, fitted it ok but now it is leaking (a lot!) from the thick black pipe under the drum area towards the front. Think the bearings are shot anyway so I give up! Looks like I’m looking for a new washer! Thanks all for the help…maybe “see” you again over in buying advice! Cheers!

    Re: Hotpoint WF321 belt query

Well after a days rest I want to give this one more try as I think (hope) the leak was coming from holes in the door seal which looks easy to replace.

However on inspection the belt seems to want to be really near (or even a bit over) the drum (forward facing) edge of the “drum belt pully/wheel” part. This is even though I moved it to the centre and put the motor end of the belt on the outermost (furthest back away from the motor end) tracks of the “motor pully” part.

Is the belt OK like this or is it going to fail again? If so is there a solution to adjust the belt so that it stays more central on its track on the drum wheel? Or maybe it’s because of bad bearings and can’t be fixed?

Thanks again for your help, I just thought it was worth one last try…..

The belt will only move on the pulley if the bearings are shot. But if the bearings are indeed shot they would make an obvious racket on spin anyway. And yes they are replaceable but, hey, it’s a Hotpoint and never worth fixing in the first place, IMHO of course. 😉

Hotpoint went to pieces when they became part of the merloni group
One of the best companies in the country back in the day. Such a shame

WF321 has a crappy sealed drum so no bearing repair possible. 😥
