big3card
ParticipantHi all , a friends washer was failing to empty so I thought it would be blocked pipes so gave all a thorough clean out reconnected and still the same … ive found the pump is not working and when I attach my meter its only showing 125v ac which is low , I removed the pump to test and it was working … so the problem is why is there only 125v to the pump when it should be 220-240v ac … damaged resistor on the board?
I’d like to ask before I remove it for inspection, any ideas welcome b3.

Are you actually a bona fide white goods engineer/trader big3card?
If so please apply for trade access ASAP. 😉

No my friend .. I get asked by a lot of people for help as I’ve always messed with washing machines/dryers for friends and family and words travel fast… I’m no engineer but do have a general understanding of what’s going on and how things work always with safety in mind, always enjoying stripping and getting it working again and helping people who would normally struggle. But now in struggling !
Hope you understand .B3

Only too well. 😉
First of all let me thank you for your honesty and I do hope that you will understand my reply.
The public forums here at UKWG’s are intended to help individual members of the general public with their ‘own’ machines, it is not a training resource.
The public perception fostered by programmes like Watchdog etc give the impression that every single self employed, independent trader is a crook, this is a million miles from the truth. There are thousands of hardworking, honest, highly qualified independent traders in this industry. They have had to invest huge amounts of time and money on training, business premises, vehicles, wages, taxes, insurance, admin and many, many other costs.
I do not know which area you live in but I am willing to bet that there will be one or two of these people close to you.
I also do not know if you are fully employed but I wonder what your reaction would be if someone was ‘moonlighting’ and undercutting your source of income on a regular basis.
Another point which you and your ‘customers’ need to think about very carefully, do you have any public liability insurance, something that all reputable, bona fide traders have.
If you don’t and by some misfortune one of your jobs leads to a major flood or heaven forbid a fire, do you have the means to compensate them?
For these reasons I personally will not be answering your posts in future.

Afraid I have to agree with jim
How do you know you are leaving appliances in a safe state ie are you earth and insulation testing them after a repair, a lot of people like to do the simple repairs like brushes, blockages etc but it sounds like you may be running a little business doing it. Believe me when I’ve seen appliances that have been looked at by a so called friend that have been left in a very dangerous conditionApril 9, 2014 at 9:53 pm #412202big3card

I accept all your concerns over safety and am aware of the outcome of meddling with these machines as water and electricity don’t mix!
All work I offer to take on is for free so no undercutting is taking place ,i don’t advertise nor look for work in this field and all jobs taken on are from family and friends knowing my outdated skills.
All testing is done at my own home where I can maintain the safety at all times ,the machines i fix are earth and insulation checked before there returned and run through all cycles for 24 hours if required before there returned, and I myself reconnect the appliance and stay with it until im comfortable to leave.
Quick overview
I left school in 88 and went to college for 2 years doing A.V repair/installation then working for radio rentals for 3 years , back to college to learn white goods, Consumer Electrical and Electronic Servicing part 1,2&3 was the coarse taken , then worked in a white goods shop in the background mainly doing the bearing jobs, Packed all that in by late 90’s to go into the building trade (bricky) self-employed until present .Im sure a refresher coarse would be all I need to bring me all upto date as I have always tinkered and never really put it down, that’s what made me find this great site.
Having said that I sourced my fault with a poor dryjoint from the relay

All credit to big3card for doing all this repair work for friends and neighbours for FREE, blimey! He even takes them away to his own home to fix them then trudges back to a no doubt delighted throng. To be honest I have never met such a charitable, selfless, caring person that would ever consider doing that, until now, especially given the various number of appliances he has sought our help over in recent months.
A bricklayer works hard and long hours and must be exhausted to return home each day. Yet big3card has little time to relax as he has an errant Hotpoint for a neighbour down the road to fix for free before he can retire for the night. Unbelievable! 😀
(On the subject of PL Insurance : The guy is fixing for free, it’s not a business venture so PLI not an obligatory requirement.)

Can I assume that when you say you do it “free” that you are paid in cash. Ie no invoice made out,
You must be charging for parts etc.
if so that has to be seen as some sort of business which should be declaredApril 10, 2014 at 1:13 pm #412207Martin

if so that has to be seen as some sort of business which should be declared“for family and friends” Andy so best not to alert HMRC at this point. But rather he should consider registering as a local charity with The Charities Commision. There are so many benefits for doing that. As long as he can wade through the reams of paperwork required in order to start that is? So rather than paying tax he could enjoy the wealth of tax relief to lighten any financial burden he could be subjecting himself to right now. 😉 😉 😉

Yes its done for free and all spares are paid for by who that machine belongs to … and yes I do trudge the machines back and forth and yes I have a job, and yes I will be seeking advise on public liability so what’s the problem here guys, .. Is it wrong and unbelievable to do a favour for someone and help for free in your own spare time in a job I’ve always enjoyed , no it isn’t … justifying yourself on a forum now that’s unbelievable .

Certainly no offence intended but I’m sure you will understand that some may try to use these sites not for what they where intended. You sound like a genuine nice chap so good luck and get some insurance, friends can easily turn to enemies if you flood them out
