Hi, I have a Hotpoint WM 52P serial number 56128133 washing machine that trips out the electrics. I am an an engineer by trade but automotive, so I have reasonable knowledge of things mechanical/electrical. Spoke to local engineer who told me these machines suffer with motor problems (particually brushes/armature) and possibly this has caused the timer/circuit board to fail and best to cut my losses and invest in a new machine? I have had the motor tested using a friends Megger and all checked out OK, brushes armature and bearings in good condition. So not sure if the motor theory comes in here. I have tried disconnecting the motor and still the machine tripps out almost as soon as the timer moves to try to do something (does it on any setting including economy). I stripped out the front of the machine and tested the heater/wiring for continuity all ok. No obvious signs of damage, burnt tracks etc on the circuit board. I’m quite capable of fitting a new timer/circuit board if I could be sure this is the only problem. Any suggestions or advise would be appreciated as it’s become a bit of a challenge.

    Thanks

It’s highly unlikely the timer/control unit will blow the trip, I would check the heater again with a megger 😉

    Mark,

Bad news I’m sure on this 😥 I suspect what has happened is the the Door Interlock has shorted out and taken with it the Timer/Electronic Control Board. (Easy check…when you rotate the Programme Dial, if it appears to be slightly stiff in places…thats the give away 🙁 )

Physically the PCB will have blown tracks near the front top end of the board as you look at it. Plus the white plastic water shield will be blackened in the immediate area!

    Hopefully I’m wrong…fingers crossed 🙂

Thanks guys, will check the timer knob/pcb board and megger the heater. The red door lock light does come on when you switch on the machine. I presume the door can be opened at any point if the interlock switch has Failed?

Didn’t have a plastic water shield fitted and saw no burn marks on the lid or machine casing.

    Cheers for the quick response!
