Hi, I have a Hotpoint WM12A first edition. Works fine but makes terrible noise on spinning. How difficult is it to change the bearings? My dad is great at mending things, but don’t want to waste his time if it’s basically impossible? I can buy a bearing kit for £17 at a local repair shop, but they quoted £120 to send it to Hotpoint to repair it. Please help!

It really depends on just how long you have left it making the noise. If you can lift the inner drum up from inside by more than a couple of centimetres then the damage may have gone too far.

A bearing change on these can be done in 45 minutes or even less with years of practice. 😉

The best thing to do is try and get the old bearings out first.

Front of cabinet off, drum front off, unscrew drum pulley nut and pulley from rear.

Protect the screwed drum shaft and knock it out. The bearings will then need drifting out of the drum.

If you have left it too long then the main (front) bearing may have collapsed, getting the outer shell of this bearing out if it has collapsed is not easy.

You also need to inspect the drum support for signs of corrosion and the drum shaft for damage due to failed bearings.

If you do manage to remove and refit the bearings it is wise to replace the black rubber drum front seal, failure to do this can lead to leaks.

I thought it was Esso that was blue, not Shell?
