ParticipantHi,
Girlfriend has a Hotpoint First Edition 1000 WM52 which Trips all the house electrics RCD when selecting a wash program.
It starts for about 1 second you can hear water pumps running then wham, it just trips out the mains RCD.
Any ideas please?

No one specific cause of this. Most likely candidates are the main motor, motor wiring harness, heater and door lock. The only way to trace the fault is by individually checking every component and wiring for earth or insulation faults with a meggar or multimeter. I assume you mean you can hear the fill valves running, the drain pump does not run on start up on this machine.

Yes, that’s correct, just briefly before the power trips off.
Thanks for the pointers, I will have another look with a multimeter later in the week.

When I disconnected the motor, the machine worked without tripping the power.
Does this mean the motor is faulty, and can I now look for a replacement? Thanks.

Sometimes you will get away with new brushes and a clean up of the commutator, it is also possible to replace the armature and brushes, failing that its new motor time.
The problem is, the more times you have allowed it to trip out, the more likely it is to have damaged the commutator, it doesn’t sound as though it has taken out the motor overload yet so you may get lucky with new brushes.

I replaced the motor and the machine is working fine now.
There were several short circuits on the old motor when measuring from motor case to the terminal block connectors.
Thanks for all help.
