Hotpoint WM63 – Lack of Spin

Hi all

This one is getting annoying, I originally got a call to say that it wasn’t spinning or draining, when I got there I found that the pump, waste pipe and T Piece under the kitchen sink were blocked with mud, cleaned it all out at which point It was quite happy to drain and spin etc (my guess at the time was that the lack of spin was due to the amount of water still present). Since then I have been called back to it because it wouldn’t spin again after 2 or 3 washes, checked the motor and found that the brushes were worn down so replaced them and once again left it happily running, I have now had a third call to say that it still isn’t always spinning – it will work happily for a couple of cycles then fail on the third – is this the timer or have I missed something? Pleas note that I have tested out insulation on the machine and continuity checked the motor very carefully.

Any help much appreciated.

Are the brushes moving freely within their holders? For the sake of a couple of quid I’d replace these in case you have a dodgy connection or they’re sticking in the holders.

TBH problem was probably brushes all along, WMs will still spin even with water in the drum. Moving the machine around probably moved the old brushes a bit and got it working for you.

They were moving quite happily when I left it and were not a tight fit in the holder – indeed the spring was making them want to escape but I do have another set in stock so will take them with me just in case.

Did you thoroughly check for a bad connection in the motor plug? These insulation displacement terminals can be iffy sometimes. Get out the wooden stick.

Keep in mind it might be an Out of balance load, if is not always doing itJJ

Is the machine only failing to spin or is there a draining issue as well, I have come across this lots of times, where the machine will run through no problem but on second or third wash it fails to drain completely and spin, normally turns out to be the pump. HTH

Turned out that Odom was right, one of the new brushes had jammed in its holder – took it out and unjammed it, even though I cannot get it to jam again I decide to put another new set in (from a different supplier). I am now waiting for the customer to run it through several washes successfully before I file this one as “Fixed”.
