ParticipantHi, I wonder if someone can help. I replaced gasket/door seal in a WM64 OK, but I have a nagging doubt about the replacement I used. It was designed for a wire hoop clamp and not the metal strip clamp that is on my machine. Also, there were four rubber tabs that slightly protude from the gasket. I wonder whether I should have cut these off. Should I replace the strip metal hoop with a wire clamp? Thanks, regards, Danny

there are 2 types of clamp fitted to this appliance, 1 a band clamp, this will fit all door gaskets, and 1 a wire type that only fits older type gaskets, hope that makes sense to you.

Some people fit the strap type seal into the groove for the wire type clamp.
I have never had a problem fitting the old style metal strap right round this type of seal.
In fact putting it over the small tabs as well often makes it fit tighter, sometimes the old type clamps were a little loose even when fully screwed up.
The wire type was actually a later design than the metal strap type and can only be fitted to a seal with a groove, the metal strap will fit both types of seal. 🙂

Thanks Bob, yes that makes sense and is reassuring. And thanks iadom – that’s put my mind at rest. 😀 Admittedly I’m a novice at washing machine repairs, but the gasket doesn’t seem designed to accommodate both band and wire clamp – and yes the band does move slightly even when tightened up quite a bit. Still, that’s great news that all is well. I’ll fire up the old girl tonight. It’s been a long time. 😆

The wire clamp was used for a few years to replace the old style metal clamp band but they reverted back to the band type some years ago.
The type of clamp you have on yours was first used around 25 years ago on the 9500 series, it was added as an extra clamp and fitted at the same time as the very early spring type clamp which occasionally allowed the seal to come adrift mid wash. :eeek:
The spring type clamp is still one of the most common types in use today across the board.
