Our WM65 stopped heating water a while back and would not run any but cold water cycles. The thermostat seemed to work and the heater certainly did (when plugged into a wall socket). So I replaced the timer control unit (1603787).

Everything seemed fairly good for a month or so. Then it still heated the water, but would not run the warmer cycles, just would not advance. Then it seemed to loose touch with reality. Advancing quickly through the wash cycle, no spinning, but spinning just fine in the rinse and the dry. In trying to figure out what was going on, I manually advanced the timer only to find the machine simultaneously pumping and filling.

So the old timer went back in, and the machine is cold water washes only.

But a month or so seems a short lifespan for a new timer. Any thoughts?

BTW: in looking at the newer timer, when I manually advance it, only the blue wheels inside spin, not the pink ones. Is this normal?

With the greatest of respect I would suggest that you let someone with the correct experience have a look at this machine.

    1. There is no thermostat in this machine.

    2. There is no need to ‘plug the heater into a socket’ to test it. 😥

    3. Not running the hot washes could have just been a faulty valve.

    4. These control units are in the main fairly reliable. I have fitted hundreds and never had one fail under 12 month g/tee.

    5. Manually advancing the timer with the machine switched on, can send the programmes out of sequence and could under certain circumstances damage the unit.

    Jim.

Re: Hotpoint WM65 going through timers

    Hi Jim-

Thank you for your advice. We are in rural France and the local repair shop has closed down, so I am in the unforturnate position of DIY or buy a new one.

The machine is currently only supplied by cold water. It will not run any but the 40 degree (or less) washes. It just does not advance on any other setting; and will not heat the water if I set the temperature higher for the cycles where it does run.

I suppose what I called the thermostat is better termed a temperature sensor and it does provide a varying resistance when imersed in warm water. Likewise I was able to (dangerously?) ascertain that the heating element is working.

Where would you recommend I start troubleshooting?

    Cheers-

Are both inlet valves connected to cold water IE a y piece which both hoses are connected to.

No, cold inlet connected to cold, a cover is on the hot inlet.

First of all i would try connecting hot and cold inlet valves to cold tap.

I will try this, though it was working correctly for a couple years in its current cold inlet only configuration.

Just try and report back if there is any change in operation.
