I had a look at a hotpoint wm72 ultima 1200 machine for a friend. the machine had fallen out of a raised kitchen unit onto its front (due to the plywood floor collapsing), and after uprighting it again it would not do anything, or respond to the front panel buttons, although the display showed “starting”. I reckoned the processor/front panel board was locked up due to water contamination, so i cleaned up the board with isopropyl alcohol. after this, it came back to life ok. I put it on a small test run, and while it was spinning, i thought i heard the motor suddenly become slightly louder. I checked brushes and they seemed ok, so I left it to do a wash.

Next day, I was told it had stopped again, with an E30 motor error. had a look, and on the motor/power board, one of the tracks going to the motor connector (to the brushes) had blown. also, the tracks feeding the two triacs looked to have overheated. there were also signs of arcing in the motor direction relay (which doesent switch during current flow).

I had a look at the motor, which seemed ok. strangely, the triacs were ok too. so i changed the direction relay, fixed up the busted track and put it on a test spin. It worked ok, and the motor was pulling about 1A at full spin speed (on a clamp meter with empty drum – I know this may not be an accurate reading).

I havent tested it on a wash yet, and I’m unsure as to what caused the PCB track to blow violently without taking something else with it.

the wiring seems ok, no chaffed or rubbed wires to the motor, so I’m left suspecting the motor, though it seems ok and there is no excessive sparking or heating.

He would like to see it fixed, as its been a very reliable machine upto this, and the bearings are fine also.

has anyone seen this before, and would ye suspect the motor ?

    thanks for any help,

    stylers.
