While running programme B the washing machine started to make the sound it makes when the load is out of balance, but it lasted far longer than normal. In hindsight I should have checked it then, but thought nothing of it. After a few minutes of this the machine started to make the most hellish noise. It was in the fast spin cycle. It was jumping up and down and had worked its way half-way out from beneath the kitchen work top. Even the dispenser drawer was hanging out the front of it.

The vibration was so severe it smashed part of the work top to pieces before I could switch it off, and the noise it was making was frightening. It must have been jumping at least 4 inches off the floor, battering against the floor and the worktop.

The clothes which included bed sheets were all knotted into a gigantic ball, and were red hot, as was the drum, and the door seal was twisted out of its normal shape by the heat generated.

There was no water whatsoever inside the machine. I get the impression from the temperature of the clothes that the water heater had been on when it shouldn’t have, or it had only been taking in hot water. but that it only an opinion and not founded on fact.

I took the top off to check there were not bursted hoses etc. The electric motor seemed to be extremely warm, but maybe it does get as warm as that. I don’t really know, never having had cause to check it before.

After taking out the clothes and seperating them, I put them back into a rinse and spin cycle, and the machine operated as normal.

My question is, can anybody tell me what happened and why, and is there any chance of it happening again, and if so what can I do to prevent it from happening.

My opinion is that the “out of balance” function didn’t operate, but that doesn’t explain why the clothes were red hot!

It is possible that the machine had just gone into its first rinse cycle, with the current hot weather the cold inlet would not be cold enough to make the clothes feel cold on the first rinse. you would have been unable to touch them if was in the wash cycle at 60°. When you load large sheets or blankets you should lay them flat on the floor, take hold of them in the middle and lift up like a wigwam, feed this end into the drum followed by the four ‘tails’. Do not bundle them up before you load them. The out of balance control system should have prevented this but there are other causes such as loose or chafing wiring that can cause OOB. If it was still in the wash cycle then you do have a fault that will almost certainly re occur.

I would strongly advise getting someone to have a look at this to check for such possibilities.
