ParticipantHad a pig of an afternoon, not helped by drifting the 35mm bearings out of a wma only to find the new front bearing floats around in it’s housing 😡 Which got me to thinking , is there an effective way of holding the bearing in tight in this kind of situation. I’ve heard people say they centre punch around the housing at the outside edge of the bearing but ive always been weary of this method ❓

ParticipantHi Allan
I have had the outer bearing not in as firmly as I would have liked on a few tub jobs in the past. Unless its loose I dont think it will present a problem as it will be pulled into place by the pulley wheel and bolt.
If its the inner bearing loose though I think you will need a new tub half.June 11, 2010 at 7:43 pm #322196helo_75

I doubt there are many engineers who have never cut a corner to get out of a tight spot. Not something any of us want to do but let he who is without sin cast the first stone i say .

If your really desperate and the customer is in agreement,Coke can, cut up,cut a strip to match the width and circumference of the bearing, lay in the bearing recess and put bearing in,there is also epoxy type quick metal you could add as well.
Some commercials and old machines had shims around shafts and bearings many many moons ago.June 12, 2010 at 8:06 am #322203lee8

I did a job for a small firm who had a recalled Hotpoint, same issue, they bodged it 8 months previously and I had to bodge it again using an epoxy metal stuff, no doubt in 8 months it’ll happen again and be someone elses problem. :rolls:
Just glad I wasn’t the client who paid £150 for sh88 work.
If the bearing is loose and you want to do it right, change the drum, if not advise client of a repair, don’t guarantee it and charge less.
Otherwise your takin a punt and that may come back to bit you.

I’ve scrapped this m/c now 😥 It was my own ( given to me with a view to recondition for resale ). To be honest i did’nt fancy putting a warranty on it, and it wasn’t worth the cost of a back half and the spider which had also gone west given what i’d get for it. It will now go to the metal recyclers via my van and waste carriers licence 😳

an engineer i know worked in a carpet factory in the 70s he used to repair the big machines they had and he said that when a bearing came loose in its houseing they used to use something called speedy sleeve said it just fitted around the bearing and filled the gap very tight then you would persuade the bearing back into place and it was a s good as new he said they never went wrong
only trouble is i have searched and found nothing similar online and he knows not where to get it fromJune 12, 2010 at 12:13 pm #322206don
