Hotpoint WMA34 doesn’t heat water after new element
Thanks to Dave for telling me where to access the heating element on this machine. I replaced the heating element with a genuine part after the machine started tripping the RCD in my junction box. It no longer trips the RCD but neither does it heat the water. Any ideas as to why this might be? All the wires are connected correctly – I took a picture of them before I took the old element out.

Merged topics, best to keep it to one thread or it get gets a bit messy.
Did you test the old heater first and if so did you find a fault on the old heater such as low insulation?
If the initial fault was not the heater but the wiring harness near the front concrete weight then moving the wires as you replaced the heater could explain why it now doesn’t trip.
it may well have damaged the main pcb though 🙁

I tested the old element with a multimeter but have no means of placing it under any load. It tested fine at low voltage. I had a look at the wires near the concrete weight, having read about chaffing problems with them on this forum, but they all looked fine.

Hmm, a megger is by far the best option for insulation testing but even a decent multimeter would show if the insulation was really poor on the heater. might be worth having a look at the pcb for signs of blown tracks.
How long did you leave it before deciding it wasn’t heating, it does take a while before the heater is switched on?

My wife reckons it hasn’t been heating the water for a while. So although I’ve stopped it tripping the RCD it still isn’t heating the water. And as it has a new element, that means something else is stopping it kicking in. It just washes everything cold.
What else could prevent the element from energising? Is it likely to be a board problem? I guess there’s a relay on there that controls it?

Not a common failure on these but I have seen it at least once in the past.

Not really with a basic multimeter. you could send it to EMW who will test it for a small fee and also repair it if required.

the fault could also be the pressure switch as the Heater circuit goes through the switch to make sure the heater is turned off if the drum is empty

Senior moment, :clown: Dave is correct, the pressure switch on these does not control the eventual wash fill level, only the overfill level. first click of the switch is the control level which allows the heater to come on, the rest of the fill is timed.
