I replaced the brushes on this machine last December with advice from iadom here for which many thanks but returned home this evening to another problem.

While on final spin (it would appear) my wife heard the machine making an unusual noise and on going into the kitchen saw that “smoke was pouring out of it.” She then summoned my son who switched it off but this must have taken a couple of minutes during which time the machine apparently continued to spin. On further questioning she couldn’t really describe the noise 🙂 and the load was apparently small and although she said there were no heavy items there was one thick jumper which would have been pretty heavy when wet.

On inspection there is a fair amount of carbon on the floor beneath the motor and the commutator seems to be slightly egg-shaped i.e. there is a high spot and the brushes can be seen moving in and out more than seems quite right. I haven’t tried to measure this yet but more than 0.5mm.

    Is this the end or..?

I’m tempted to try a rinse and spin to see for myself (what’s the worst that can happen with RCD and fire extinguisher to hand? 😆 ) but thought I’d better ask here first!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Two choices, new motor or new machine. 🙁

Thanks for that unambiguous if brutal advice Martin 🙂 which was much as I expected.

Now – how do I go about negotiating a discount on an ISE machine please?
