Hi,

this problem seems to be common for all WMA models. Has anyone got to the root of it yet?

My machine went bang this morning and only a few lights plus the door light remained. I checked out the door catch and found it to be working perfectly fine with 0.10v on live and switch closing the resistance when operated.

Then…. I cheked the PCB to find it had smoked with tracks popping off all over the place, obviously a nasty surge/short. After fixing the broken tracks i attempted to start the machine again, it ran for 10 seconds then went pop again!

The latest damage to PCB was broken tracks in a different place, the smoke trail seems to be leading to the motor wires. Tommorow i will grab the special star socket needed to get the brushes off to check if there is a problem there. It could also be the element

Short circuit door lock blows pcb.
Short circuit heater blows pcb.
Short circuit motor blows pcb.
Short circuit pump blows pcb.
Wiring chaffing on front weight creates short circuit and blows pcb.
Wicked Witch of the West turning round three times creates short circuit and blows pcb.

probably all of the above by the looks of what i found this morning.

Someone mentioned the wires rubbing on the chassis at the front of te machine so i put the machine on its side for a closer look. Here is what i discovered……

As Westwood would say, “not a good look!”.

I am pretty upset with this because that is very poor design. Not just the way the cables are bunched together like that but the fail safe mechanism that does not exist i.e a fuse of some sort. The PCB is the fuse in this case so i will be writing to Hotpoint to ask them what they think about their ‘Hotpoint’ in the wiring scheme.

good news! My bad soldering to patch up the PCB and seperating the fraid wires has fixed the problem and the machine now works. Well i say works, I am currently testing it on ‘rinse/spin’ program but after one cycle it has carried on to do another rinse and spin?? If it does a third then there is definately still a problem lol

Maybe I have connected the PCB wires back incorrectly? Any confirmation on this would be appreciated.

Here is the damage the initial short caused. That could have easily turned more nasty.

I know this part of the wiring is correct because if the highlighted part is the other way around then it wont go fast spin

My other half has just informed me that the rinse/spin program has finnished. It did go twice but maybe that is normal. Going on that i assume this wiring is correct for anyone that forgets.
