ParticipantI have a WMA57 which has worked fine until about a year ago when we started to have problems with certain wash cycles – for instance, it won’t drain properly from a handwash cycle – leaving the clothes dripping wet at the end of the cycle.. but I could live with that, as I’d put it on a slow spin cycle and the wash would be fine…
But now we’re having intermittent problems with the machine filling – its prewash light starts flashing, but the water is pouring in and filling the drum! It is currently situated in a room which used to be a coal shed (now connected to the house). Its supply is fine, we do about 8 washes a week no probs, but sometimes it will just not get on with the wash, filling and filling (sometimes draining as fast as it’s filling!).
It seems to work better if the dryer opposite it is working, (hence warming up the room), I do an empty 95 degree wash every few weeks with no probs, it just won’t drain on synthetics (and handwash) and won’t fill properly on cottons! I got the machine over 5 years ago, and we’ve moved house twice since.
Any ideas?

It would be a good idea to check the sump hose filter.
Plug out, lower back panel off, plenty of towels on floor. The sump hose is the large black one under the drum.
You also need to check that the machine is not syphoning due to the outlet hose being too low or pushed down the standpipe too far. If it is connected to a standpipe it should go down it no more than five or six inches.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner..!
I noticed that hubby had put the drain hose a long way into the downpipe – pulled it out about 4 inches and the machine started filling properly – 😀
I made him sort out the filter at the back end of the machine after it flooded the utility area and now it works again. He pulled out a load of gunk and a couple of those colour catcher things – our machine likes to eat them for some reason.
Thank you for your help!

We love colour catchers, the best invention since Tatzo’s for blocking machines apart from bra wires and coins, keeps us in work. 🙂
Shouldn’t really tell you this but if you feel you must use colour catchers then pin them to an item of clothing with a safety pin. 😉
