ParticipantI have a fault on my wma60 in that everything happens as normal during any programme run except at the end when the machine will not do a final pump out and the door stays locked. I have checked for leaks and blockages and everything seems ok could this be a fault on the contoller board or is the fault more “mundane” ( hope so)

Have you checked all of the pipework including the outlet hose? If it is connected directly to the undersink plumbing then it may have a blockage at that end.
Have you removed the drain pump to make sure there is nothing restricting the impellor?
The pump impellor should not spin freely but should ‘flick’ round at quarter turn intervals, it should also not flop about but be fairly rigid. Can you hear any noise from the pump when it goes into drain sequence?

Hi iadom
thanks for the quick reply. yes Ive checked the drain hose and it is free from any blockage, the pump does make a sound when it is pumping out during the wash cycle but I have not removed it to check that is turning as you describe.
However I did not mention that a couple of weeks ago I removed the sump to take out a coin that had become trapped between inner and outer drum I made sure that it was put back correctly the only difference was that I used jubilee clips to secure the sump hose to the pump as I could not get the original spring clips back. as an aside is there a trick to get the original clips back on or do you need a special tool??
if the machine goes through a normal wash (except at the end) does this not mean most of the components are working ie inlet valves, pressure switch, pump etc. damm complicated these new fangled whotsits, think I’ll trade it in for a dolly tub

There are some special tools but most of us use large pliers, mole grips or plumbers wrench.
If it still has the original pump then it is possible that the flap valve in the pump is sticking.
Is your outlet pipe connected to the undersink plumbing or does it go into a standpipe.
If it goes into a standpipe then you can remove the rubber flap valve from the pump outlet.
Pump can also seize when it gets hot which will be towards the end of the cycle.
A new pump is not that expensive, if it is making a noise before the final spin cycle then it might be worth sticking a new pump in it.

Just sorted one today – Turned out to be chaffed wires rubbing on the front brick , quite common so i`m led to believe . :rolls:
To check them properly the front panel needs to come off :-*UNPLUG* … lid off , plinth off , soap tray screws out (3) , door seal off , interlock off , front panel off (lift), brick off ……..
check wiring loom running down the right hand side paying close attention to the area which may be rubbing on the brick . the wires don`t have to be seperated , chaffing through to the copper core is enough to play electrical havoc .
Good luck 😉December 14, 2009 at 11:26 pm #306378iadom

Very common, usually leads to the module going up in smoke, wouldn’t explain why this machine only fails to empty on the final spin though. 😉
Worth a look all the same. no need to remove any plinths or panels, just lean the machine back against a wall and shine a torch underneath to inspect although its worth noting that the pump wiring does not run near to the concrete balance weight (brick) but down the side of the cabinet and along the chassis.
Only the motor and heater wiring run close to the weight. 8)December 14, 2009 at 11:40 pm #306379lasty

Agree with you there mr. iadom , the customer called with a `no spin` problem – pump checked out fine . A test wash confirmed it wasn`t emptying and therefore carried on distributing ad-infinitum . Checking the pump wiring i noticed the badly chaffed main motor loom and decided to sort it out anyway …..
Ran a couple of quick test washes and all was well . I know the motor loom and pump are on seperate circuits and the chaffing usually leads to a spin problem but the most annoying thing is not knowing HOW i fixed it :rolls:

quick update
first off many thanks for all the helpful advice. I’ve canned the dolly tub replacement as I think I’ve sorted it, more by chance than anything else (witchcraft it most surely is!!!) .after checking for frayed (shorted wires) I ran a normal wash whilst looking for anything obvious as it went through its thing and noticed a small drip (not me) coming from where I had put the hose back on to the sump. At the end of the cycle it stopped as usual so I manually drained it unlugged it from the mains and reseated the sump hose. and ran the cycle again, And lo, it worketh a treat. ran a few more cycles with no problems whatsover. The question is… WHY?????
off on a tangent we have always had Hotpoint washers and on the whole have been most satisfied, but considering a replacement in case this one gave up the ghost or was to uneconimical wifey was peturbed that the new hotpoint machines had dispensed with several functions she likes in paricular
prewash, rinse hold and only cold fill, any reason Hotpoint?
anyways thanks again for the help

Have a good read on these boards, Hotpoint as such was taken over by the Indesit Company around seven years ago and they have destroyed what was becoming a spent force anyway. 😥
Look at spending £450+ at the least for Bosch/Neff. Siemens or Miele, you could also have a look at our ISE machines.
If possible stick to a local retailer who will be able to tell you if the machine you are buying has the dreaded sealed drum or not.
All machines are cold fill these days.

If you use a good quality detergent such as Ariel powder or tablets together with the cold fill on modern machines then using a prewash is rarely required.
