ParticipantHave a Hotpoint WMD960 washing machine a couple of years old. We still have it under extended warranty thing with Domestic & General so can call them out if necessary. I was just hoping to avoid the hassle if it was something I could fix myself. Currently the machine is full of washing and we can’t open the door, this after an F05 fault came up. I’ve searched and this appears to mean “pressure switch jammed on full”. I’ve also read that seemingly this model is supposed to have a “self cleaning pump” (which is supposedly not always self cleaning) and “internal” as in non accessible filters. Any tricks / tips on this one? Many thanks.

First of all, a self cleaning pump means it will get rid of the water and small amounts of fluff etc. It will not get rid of all the rubbish that careless users put in the machines such as coins, bra wires, hairgrips, etc, etc.
It depends exactly how old your machine is, the early ones have a pump at the rear, the later, totally Indesit :rolls: ones have a completely sealed drum and the pump and filter is as the front.
If you remove the lower front kickstrip you can see if it has a front filter at the bottom right. If you find a large, red plastic blank then the pump is at the rear and can be accessed from behind the lower back panel. Often you will find the sump hose blocked, again always with junk that should not have been put in the first place.
Be sure to remove the plug and have a bowl and several large towels handy.

Yep, took the whole thing out into the garden on a sack trolley. As you said red plastic blank at the front. Back off, (2 screws) and the pump sits down on the bottom right. Will gently prise the serrated hose clips off and work back from the outlet hose. By “sump hose” do you mean the short black pipe into the pump or the grey long outlet hose? Cheers.

The large black rubber hose is the sump hose, it has a coin trap inside it that often gets clogged with all sorts of stuff. Take great care not to get any water on the large pcb in the base.
If the coin trap is clear then a small object may have got through into the pump itself, hairgrips, bits of bra wire, hair bobbles can work their way into the pump.

I have the machine in the garden on a step so was able to lay the drain hose flat. It drained VERY quickly with little sign of debris making me wonder if it is a blockage. So white clip off holding the drain hose on to the pump, white clip off holding the black sump hose to the pump and then removed the big spring clip on to release the sump hose. No real debris anywhere so far…..interesting to see inside what I guess is the coin trap, a sort of golf ball sized float/ball – one way valve is it? I’ll look closely at the pump next. Thanks.
UPDATE: Sticking a finger into the pump and the impeller would only rotate a few mm either way. Took it out and found a piece of 2″ bra wire wedged in there. Long nose pliers did the trick. Just putting it back together now. The price I suppose for the wife having great knockers! 😀 Pictures to follow…………..of the wire that is.
Seriously though, many thanks for your assistance.

Its the eco ball, it floats up to seal off the sump preventing the detergent from being flushed right into the sump, keeping it all in the drum for efficient use of detergent.
Sounds like something has got through into the pump.

Thought i’d share this, fault code f-05 .had this code twice on my 6mth old washer/dryer, 1st time time there was an elastic band around the propellor/impeller thing all put back and worked great, tonight 2 weeks later F-05. switched off & unplugged it, i have both times pulled the washer completely out then tipped right back to lean against the wall, removed the front lower cover (push a small slotted screwdriver up into the 3 cut out lugs) , towel ready, bucket and small bowl to catch all the water. unscrewed the plug/filter, then slowly taking the weight tipped the washer forward to fill the bowl, tip back to stop the flow, empty the bowl into the bucket and repeated till just a drip coming out. in the bucket was a tiny round plastic disc size of a 50p piece. plug/filter screwed back in, cover replaced, lowered the washer to ground again, checked drain hose still in the drainage pipe, put back in place, switched on, turned to fast spin and hey presto, fully working. seems like unless i check clothes pockets better this is a repeat thing. best of luck, sarah?

If you don’t take the few extra seconds to check pockets etc,‘as advised in the user manual’ then one of these days you may find the machine totally wrecked due to a coin or other hard metal object punching a hole right through the outer plastic drum, a hugely expensive repair, not covered by guarantee even if six weeks old, never mind six months. :lesson:
