    Hi,
washer is 2 1/2 years old and is now making loud din on spin cycle. suspect bearing?
I’m a complete novice. Could anyone give me approximate cost to fix incl parts/labour as I won’t be attempting?

    many thanks,

    Hi Steve,

It’s got a welded tank in it. 🙁

An explanation of what that is here:

    http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buyi … -care.html

It’s under five years old so Hotpoint (aka Indesit) will replace the part free but charge you about £100 “labour” for the privilege if you don’t get conned into taking out a warranty by the salespeople you’ll have to call.

That’s the cheapest possible way, the tank itself as a spare for the washing machine is listed at over £100 plus VAT never mind labour to fit it.

If they won’t cover it under warranty for some reason, to be honest, I’d scrap it as it’s not worth spending the money on.

thanks. It’s disappointing that these machines are effectively “disposable” these days. I’ve bought a new machine…

    Spot on information from kwatt.
A smidge over £100 for a Hotpoint engineer to confirm that the bearing was shot and to return and replace the drum.

My machine is 2 1/2 years old too. It is used throughout the week but no way can the use be described as excessive compared to some households.

I try to stick to British brands where I can and so my kitchen/utility room is equipped with 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Hotpoint goods.
But I am disappointed with this. I don’t mind if the bearings don’t last years if they can be replaced cheaply (I would do it myself) but if it means the whole drum has to be replaced then Hotpoint should put a bit more thought into Quality Control.

    Rant over…

Rant possibly misplaced. Hotpoint ceased to be a British company around 10 years ago when they were taken over by Merloni of Italy, or the Indesit Company as it now is.

The last UK factory was closed almost 3 years ago and the rubbish that is now sold as Hotpoint is shipped in from Italy, Poland etc. :rolls:

It ranks just above most of the Chinese made tat on the market, but having said that some Hotpoint dishwashers are actually Indesit machines made in China anyway. 🙁

I guess that is all they are now – a ‘British’ brand. Real shame but you could name hundreds of similar situations.

My machine was repaired yesterday using the £104.99 option.
For that the engineer replaced the entire drum (parts would have cost me £140). But he also had to replace the heating element as the rubber seal cannot be re-used (I think that would have been about another £20 in parts).

The engineer told me that the original model had a smaller load but the load had been increased for this model but without uprating the bearings…

Deep joy! That means everyone wins. Andy has punted best part of £500 in the last 3 years on this machine. Its back working again and he is well happy. Meanwhile Hotpoint have profitted from his overall missfortune by an investment ratio of at least +6{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}…… 😉

The ‘original’ Hotpoint machines already had ‘uprated’ bearings, it was the Indesit Company that downrated them to smaller, cheaper bearings in the first place. The list price of the drum complete is actually £115 but at a guess costs them well under £50, possibly even less. 😥

The machine cost me £250/260 2 1/2 years ago – which in real terms isn’t a lot for a washing machine. So it would be wrong to expect Rolls Royce standards.

My gripe is that it appears to have been built to be almost economically un-repairable. Which takes us back to the fact that these are cheap imported machines and marketed under an old trusted brand – with little interest in preserving the values of that brand.
The new owners of the brand are exploiting years of consumer confidence & will ditch the brand as soon as the punters realise this.

This is not a question of investment ratios – there is no investment. This is simply a badging exercise.

Interesting – I guess it just confirms what I put in my other post. That the Hotpoint brand loyalty is being exploited.

If the machine was properly designed you would be able to replace just the bearings. And if it was really properly designed you could put in uprated bearings…

Funnily enough I have replaced two sets of bearings in Hotpoint machines this week already, WM range of machines, one made in 1998 the other 1999.

Both jobs well under £100, machines are good for many years yet. 8)

I think that is exactly the point – in the good old days (i.e. pre-2008!) these machines were built with a long term view.

All that happens now is that a cheap source for a machine in China or Eastern Europe is found and a Hotpoint badge is slapped on the machine by some men in suits.
The machine is then punted out to the retailers, the faceless men in suits trousers a nice fat profit.
The brand eventually loses all credibility and disappears…

Sorry for my ramblings – I am not sitting in a tent outside St. Pauls Cathedral (in fact I’m very much the epitome of what they hate).

p.s. all credit to you for supporting such an excellent forum.
