Sister in a flap over her Hotpoint WT540
On investigation was switched off at the wall so powered it up.
On/off light is on and stays on even if the button is toggled.
On power up the rinse hold button flashed rapidly with no regular pattern, then stayed solid but disappeared after 30s plus.
Powered down at the wall, waited 10s then powered up. Rinse hold flashing on Prog D so turned the programmer and still flasing or staying up solid on various selections.
Opened the drum door and closed again, tried the on/off to no avail, power light still on solid.

    Any help/advice appreciated.

Third light (rinse hold) flashing is F02. Motor or tacho fault.

If you are very lucky it could just be a dodgy motor plug wiring connection, I had an Indesit machine, (which this is) on Friday with same fault code that was a simple broken wire to the motor.

If the motor wiring checks out the either the motor or the main pcb could be faulty.
Could be motor brushes but they should give different symptoms, still worth checking those as well.

Many thanks for your reply, I will get to checking mid week.
My sister said the machine did 3 washes that day in quick succession but when she went to do a 4th! wash it would not respond to the start button so switched it off at the wall.

Just double checked that model number and that machine has a 3 phase motor so no brushes to check just the wiring connections.
