ParticipantHi,
Ive got a Hotpoint WT640GUK that wont start a cycle.
Powers on and all the LED’s light up when i first turn it on, so i know its not just a case of LED not working, but the ‘Door locked’ light doesn’t come on when i shut the door, and i presume it is supposed to. All the other lights along side it light up when i prepare it for cycle, just not the door locked one. So i press start and nothing happens. The door is locking though, have to power the machine off and wait a few minutes for the door to release.
I thought i was 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure it must have been the door interlock, so ordered a replacement one of those off ebay. Tried that tonight but its not made any difference. Must still be to do with the door locking though, because i asked it to start a cycle whilst leaving the door open, and it was just exactly the same as when i have it closed. All lights on except that one. I left it on in this state for about half an hour before and when i went back to it there was a message on the digital display reading ‘door’.
Can anyone help please?

They do say, “little knowledge is a dangerous thing” 🙂I would be checking the motor brushes and motor wiring plug connections. 😉

Lol.
Well i couldn’t try and deny it, i have not got the foggiest clue about washing machines as is probably evident from my first post. Put it this way, if i do continue to try and check the motor brushes or motor wiring plug connections i will have to follow a how to off the internet.
Aslong as i turn it off first what harm can i do eh as the chances are we’re going to end up buying a new one anyway.

Cheers mate.
Im in, and can see the bleeders, but cant get them out, been poking about but cant see properly, looking for a clip to unclip them and slide them out. Watched a video on how to do it, looks alot easier if your motor is at the top, mines in the bottom right hand corner so doing it from the little back panel. Think the clip might be behind. Is it sometimes a case of having to take the motor out completely?

Yes, motor out is the only way.

Doh!
Even though i can see and feel the casing that the brushes are in? Can’t help feel that someone who knew where the clip was would be able to slide them out. Can get my hand in, just cant see what the hell im doing.
Could go wrong this then.
Any pointers on taking motor out?
Looks like its bolted on, un do those bolts and try to slide off the belt?

This lad from Manchester is pretty smart, he’s guessed it already. 😀

The brushes that just slide in have not been used on Hotpoint machines for almost 15 years or more, yours are fixed in with screws so you have to remove the motor as you suggest.

Ok they’re out.
Now, they are only about 7mm in length. The springy-ness feels ok, but is it safe to say that them only being 7mm means they are ******d? And if i replace these we think theres a high probability my washer will work?
Mod edit, please take care of your language, this is a ‘family forum’ 😉

In fact, one of them is more like 5mm, from the bottom of it to the edge of the tip. From the pictures ive seen, they’re nackered?

The ends of the brushes should be smooth and shiny, if they are rough and pitted they are goosed.

They have got what looks like a few speckles of copper on them.
The casing is ever so slightly different on each of them.
Looks like someone has replaced one of them at some point. Because the angle of the brushes goes the same way on both. So when they’re on, one of the brushes is actually on wrong, and just the tip of the brush is touching on that side.
Someones even more of a cowboy than me when it comes to washing machines by the looks of it.

The angle should be the same on both , they are fitted on opposite sides after all.
