So you have never seen a faulty on/off switch before. Any on/off switch to me just means a piece of plastic is in one position as opposed to another.

If I can’t see a plug that is not pulled from the socket then I wouldn’t trust an on/off switch without passing my mains sniffer over it.

No earth connection is the more likely reason.

I think we’ve all had a belt one time or several.
As the Pink Floyd album title stated all down to a, momentary lapse of reason.
Just lucky I guess that the RCD saved you and sometimes it’s not really your fault, most times I expect it just comes down to making assumptions that prove to be false.
Wouldn’t worry about it too much though, gives the heart a jolt and reminds you not to be so damned stupid. 😉

I walked into a house one day, brand new build, warranty call on a Candy integrated washer.
Easy job, module fried and knew that before I walked in, with said module.
Now being as I knew these machines like the back of my hand, all I needed to do was draw it out, tip it back, reach in and pop the old module out, bang a new one in…
Two minute job.
Me being me, switched off the power on the isolation wall switch. Just so as I didn’t get a belt you understand.
Reached in, grabbed the module and blam, next words out my most were along the lines of “Oh you mutha******* ******* of hell”, RCD pops, house goes dark.
Woman walks through and says, “sorry I forgot to tell you that the switch doesn’t cut the power off, hope that’s ok?”
No it’s ********** not ok you stupid ******. I thought, didn’t say.
Easy job, yeah okay.
A close relative is a very, very good sparky and he scares the bejesus out me working on live stuff but he’s relaxed about it, no idea why as some of the stuff he works on would probably belt you hard enough to put you in orbit. But his attitude is, so long as you tick the right H&S boxes all is well, if you’re dumb and make a mistake that’s fine you won’t do it again. If you’re really plain bloody stupid and make a mistake that kills you you won’t make the mistake again either. So win, win.
The upshot being, stupid people or those without a clue shouldn’t be working with electricity.
But his take is, if you’re on an RCD protected circuit the chances of you coming to serious harm are so remote as makes no odds. You’ll get a jolt, a bloody good fright but killed, no unless you’ve a pre-existing condition that would likely kill you if you touched the wrong terminals on a decent battery.
If you don’t check it’s on a protected circuit, your bad.
If you don’t check and you do something dumb, guess what?
If you take a punt and it all goes wrong, guess what?
I tend to check now. Getting zapped may well give the old ticker a jolt and get the juices flowing but honestly, I can live without the trauma.

If you have a neutral fault or a switch cuts the neutral feed rather than live, then it’s still going to be getting a live feed to it. Door open, on/off switch is irrelevant in these cases as when you touch it, you are acting as the neutral.

:rolls: was thinking that . like lights always a live and just switches the neutral

never assume unless you have checked.
had a house cross polarity from the meter years ago. that mean every circuit was protected by a 60 amp fuse as all the fuses were in the neutral
really lucky they never had a fireDave

ParticipantRe: how and have i been lucky ?
Long time ago before the age of RCDs I had a call where the mains lead to the washer had been extended using a three pin in line rubber connector which I unplugged and got the shock of my life.
The customer had wired the live/neutral into the male pins.Lesson learned.

We’ve all punted our thoughts as to what potentially what was the reason. Do tell us what you found in the end?
