I didn’t think about this at first, but as more and more people look to save money, they may inevitably consider and use lower temperatures on their washing machines. But constant low temperature washes can do more harm than good to a washing machine and probably cost them more in parts (or even a new machine) than what was actually saved.

I am asking people here what they think people should do to cut costs when using their washing machine? The obvious answer is to always wash a full load. But what about temperatures and maintenance washes? Is it best just to keep using hot wash cycles, or is it okay to use low temperature programs as long as a drum clean (or empty boil wash) cycle is performed roughly once a month? Would we be saving money using the latter method?

One of the most important things is to follow the care labels as it’s cheaper to wash correctly than to replace what could have been an expensive item. Yes low temperature washes are energy saving, don’t overdose on powder or fabric conditioner and a yes, perform a maintenancve wash regularly.

There is a whole load of info here which may help.

Ours runs at least one 60 degree wash each week (sheets or towels) using Bio powder and that seems to keep it clean enough.
