When my Bosch WFF 1401 wouldn’t drain the water after a wash, I drained it using the little rubber hose at the front and then opened the pump cover to find one of the nipper’s socks poking out of the drain pipe (just before it got to the pump blades).

I’ve checked the rubber seal around the door opening thoroughly (found a pound coin – nice bonus) and inside the drum but couldn’t find any split or hole.

So how did the sock get there? Any ideas? Is it likely to happen again? Or was it something to do with the dark arts? We do get Harry Potter around here quite a lot 😉

A very common occurrence, they will get between the seal and the drum, you should avoid overloading and if possible use a ‘washbag’ for all small items, and think yourself lucky regarding the £1 coin, on machines with nylon outer drums these can damage the drum beyond repair, often resulting in a new appliance being required.

Oooh, a close shave with the pound then.

I have got a washbag for smalls but Mrs Madvibe, being an impetuous and impatiant type, refuses to have anything to do with it.

She also refuses to descale the iron etc saying “why have a dog and bark yourself” but thats by-the-by.

I shall impart your words of wisdom and try to get her make the thing last a bit longer.

Thanks very much for the advice.

I still don’t see how the sock got there though; the seals seem very tight, but I suppose the evidence is incontrovertible.

Tell her that she has my permission to check all pockets and keep everything that she finds. 🙂
When the sock is warm, wet and soaked with detergent it will slip through the smallest of gaps.
