Its nice to see you are actively thinking about backups, I speak to many companies who do not keep backups and have lost losts of data.

In most cases all you need to do is copy the files from the My Documents folder to to external memory, the external memory should show as a drive in My Computer. So just right click on the file you want to backup in My Documents and go to “copy”, then go into My Computer, double click on the drive icon for the memory stick, then go to the Edit menu and Paste.

If you are backing up from a custom software package, there should be a backup program included, you should be able to point the backup to the memory stick and save the backup directly to the external storage.

There are other programs which will backup the whole hard drive but this is unlikely to fit on a memory stick.

If you can post what type of data you are trying to backup I may be able to help more.

Plus of course you can always purchase an external hard drive (usb compliant) for huge files?

Memory sticks are great though aren’t they? But very easy to lose or mislay though, so keep them safe at all times. 😉

2 Gig memory stick won’t do you a lot of good if the lot fails. O.K. for documents and lots of little things, I think they are brilliant.

I have a Maxstore external memory device which will take about 120 gig, and use a “retrospect” programme to transfer files & back up. You can back up all your hardware drivers, and the data to allow a painless restore of the whole computer, then all you need to do is a regular incremental back-up of amended or added files. I have mine set to carry out the incremental on a daily basis.

Will only work on 2000/2003 Server and XP though. N.T.4 or win 98, forget it.

If you have a network, using retrospect you can also copy to another p.c. on the system, which I do every night as belt & braces.

    Hi
I use DVDs, seem pretty reliable.
You should never use memory stick for long term storage they tend to be easily corruptable over a period 😀
