That’s handy then! How do you solder the new brushes in place? The original ones are spot welded in, the metal ‘brass like’ fixings will not allow regular fluxless solder to adhere….hence my question? 😉

Easy Martin….snip away the old brush, a quick touch with a file to the remaining piece of the tag on the spot weld to get it bright and hey presto! 😉

Blimey! Spot welding ’em on eh?
I’ll ask……..

…..how much they cost? 😉November 29, 2006 at 9:01 am #196570kladave

martin you don’t need to with a set of seme code w1-18012/a these carbons come fitted with aform of amp tag which clips onto carbon holder frame 😆

No Martin….solder! You need to get your iron lovely and hot, and hold it to the joint for a few seconds to get enough heat onto the workpiece before you introduce the solder otherwise the tag acts as a wonderful solder mop.
I actually put a tiny blob of solder on the end of the new tag then heat and solder the plate first before just touching the new tag onto it. :lesson:November 29, 2006 at 9:07 am #196572Martin

Thanks for that Clive. I have tried that same method with an 80w iron but with no success I must admit, a very poor unsafe joint is the result. The other problem being the length of copper wire being a danger, it has to be cut to size to avoid shorting against the casing. Question is, by how much? Sheathing the bare wire is no option as that only restricts its movement.
Perhaps the shielded lead carbons with tags a better option?

You just need to keep the iron in contact for longer Martin…in your earlier post you mentioned using fluxless solder but you must use fluxed solder! The technique is to hold the iron in place with a little solder on it’s tip to get a good heat transfer then touch the solder on the plate adjacent to the iron. When the solder begins to flow you know you’re up to temperature.
As to the tag length that’s the easy bit, clip the old brush tight to the spot weld and when it’s out hold the new brush to it and snip its tag to the same length! 😉

Thanks for the clarification Clive, I will give it a go to the next one I get with duff brushes 😉

looking at the brushes and motor why dont you order some 1604462 brushes. Hotpoint use that motor on their early wma machines and its a 10 minute job to change brushes without taking mtor off machine

Theyt wouldnt fit, these are the older Bosch motors with enclosed carbons that dont come out without a motor strip down. I always fit the complete end frame of the motor anyway, saves getting hands dirty.
