ParticipantI see B&Q are advertising a Celcus (?) washing machine for £126.65…….astonishing, and a bit depressing.

To answer the question, no lower.
Here’s the thing…
I was listening to some dude on the radio this morning who summed it up rather well, although not verbatim, this is the gist of it.
There has been a huge drop in the value of Sterling against the Dollar and the Euro, 25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} in two months. No manufacturer or importer can absorb a 25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} price increase without raising costs, especially in the retail marketplace.
In other words, expect price hikes as soon as any stock in hand is cleared.
Big ones.

Hi Mark
Where are you sourcing Miele appliances from?
Just curious as the Miele price list say`s prices are valid until 5th February on freestanding and until 28th February on built in products, I have not been told anything different yet………. by Miele themselves.

Cheers Clayside
At least I`m not undercharging 😉 Just sold an integrated full size dishwasher and a combiset gas hob, so at least I got these prices right.

Well, lets hope a general hike in retail prices does happen, even 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} would make a big difference to the take up rate of repairs IMO.
I know we have the knock on effect on spares to consider but it would on balance be better for our trade i would say.
The price to simply replace an appliance is i’m afraid THE deciding factor for 80{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of people, most simply couldnt give two hoots about waste, its the cheapest percieved route to having clean clothes, dishes or whatever thats foremost in their minds.
Seeing that Zanussi or whatever at £269 instead of £229 can only help us, no question.

Had a close look at a CELCUS machine in B&Q today. At that price I thought they must be Chinese but no, I’m 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain its a Vestel. It does have the European Union flag on it but no other obvious identification of origin. Do Vestel have factories outside Turkey?

No Jim they don’t and it may well be Vestel.
The problem is that a lot of what’s being dumped now was bought last year and this is them trying to liquidate stock to buy new stuff.
But, look at any new stock coming in (if anyone has any) and see just how much the prices have jumped.
And, I don’t think we’re done yet on that front.
The cheap machines being dumped, it cannot continue for long. It will only last until current stocks are cleared.

Joe public are in for one hell of a big shock come Feb 1st as some prices are going up massively. Trouble is when you advance warn your customers all they say is “I thought we are in a crdit crunch / recession so prices must come down” 😯 I don`t think they have heard about the Euro yet, but come their summer hols they will noticed it`s value or lack of it 😈

I was chatting to a reporter from the BBC yesterday and trying to explain to him the complexity of what’s going on now and what’s about to happen and despite working for a financial program he couldn’t get it either.
The general assumption being that, when times get tough, prices get slashed and that’s good news for consumers.
You could almost hear his jaw hit his desk when I told him that exactly the opposite was going to happen and that the days of cheap consumer durables and electronics were, for the moment, pretty much over. Sure, there’s going to be some companies, one I know of already, that will dump stock to maintain production but all that does is devalue the brand/s and you lose money faster. And, yes, there will likely still be some cheap Chinese rubbish floating about in the system. But, for the most part, prices are on the way up and as Don says, on the way up massively.
There’s a number of factors in play causing it but it is, in my opinion, totally unavoidable that the cost of most appliances will rise substantially over the next few months.

Hopefully this round of increases will eventually see some value come back into the industry after all the years of price erosion we have experienced, we can but hope :rolls:

Amen to that. 😀
The all powerful Euro is making a bit impact on the shop floor prices right now and only for that reason are the prices creeping up. The yuan is not holding up against the dollar either so I expect to see Chinese goods getting more costly by and by.
So on the one hand sales will continue to slow whilst servicing becomes more viable. The only worry is that the cost of spare parts will rise according to the value of the Euro, hopefully not increasing the BER rate though?

That’s not the only reason Martin, there’s a myriad of them but that is, for the moment, the overriding factor, yes.
