How many engineers in the uk??

Am try to establish the size of our industry in terms of engineers. Yell.com lists 1060 white goods repair companies.
Some of these will be owner only and others will employ 1 – 30 and an ever decreasing percentage will employ high numbers.

Could I ask 4 things?
1. How many engineers in your company? (If you have figures for manufactures that would also be helpful)
2. Are you looking to increase your numbers if so by how many?
3. Has any one done any research into this before?
4. Has any one retired from you company this year 2015-2016

For my business, the answers are 1, No, No, No.

According to Labour Force Survey data, there are around 76,000 people employed in the UK in electronic and electronic trades “not elsewhere classified” and 14,000 self-employed. This categories covers everyone in electrical and electronic trades other than electricians and electrical fitters, telecommunications engineers, TV, video and audio engineers and IT engineers. It also excludes assemblers of electrical and electronic products and vehicle electricians. But doubtless a lot broader than the white goods repair trade.

There’s some information about employment in the household goods repair sector, probably based on HMRC or Companies House data, but I doubt the data behind it is that robust. It would include admin staff in this sector and likely exclude engineers employed by manufacturers and retailers.

I think if you were to double that figure, and by no more, then you’d be about right. And for each subsequent year hereafter whittle it downward.

I’m just guessing of course, we can only guess anyway but I’m not far off the mark.

Yell doesn’t have them all, you can’t trust one source only sadly.

Last I check in about 2013/4 there were about 2.4K active although that will likely have dropped as that has been the general trend.

Figure on about 1.5-3 employees per active company and you probably won’t be too far off the mark but, it’s guesswork as nobody measures it.
