ParticipantI’m looking at a safety product that involves stripping down the water valve in a washing machine to fit a. I’ve just realised that some water valves are sealed and cannot be stripped down. How widespread is this? How many washing machines have the old-style water valve with four screws holding the two halves together?

Come on Andy, don’t keep us in suspense, to fit a ????????????.
I haven’t seen a valve with four screws in for years, other than in very old machines. It is possible to unscrew some of the later valves but others are that tight or glued and are impossible to open.

I can’t recall the last time I saw a valve that could be stripped down!
Any I’ve seen recently have all been sealed throw-away jobs. 😕

Just for you Ken, this is a brand new Hotpoint 161387 I have just dissected. I use a pair of long nosed pliers to unscrew the stem, sometimes they are very difficult to turn but I succeed 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time.
I only do it if I come across an unusual shaped valve that is leaking and that uses the same valve stem.

The coils will normally just pop off, but every manufactuer seems to have a different plug arrangement on the coil 😕

I’ve had quite a few where I couldn’t even get the coil off and some where the coil comes off but I couldn’t unscrew the stem without damaging it.

I’m looking at a product similar to a Bosch aqua stop hose. To fit it you have to remove the little plunger inside the water valve. Once fitted it replaces the valve with one right at the beginning of the hose so when the valve is off there’s no pressure in the hose so it can’t burst.
It also eliminates most of the water hammer associated with the valve shutting off which can be loud in some homes. The idea is it can be fitted to any washing machine.

ParticipantI bothered today as the diafram in a aquastop valve had burst on an old siemens dishwasher. The customer didn’t want to run to the expense of a complete hose kit, so I removed the diafram from a uni single valve. I must say the new valve presented a chalenge as it was glued together!
