Na, they’ll learn. As I said before up till now the supermarkets haven’t had to deal with service too much let alone in-home service and that caries a cost. So there are limitations on how low the prices can drop.
I remember the furore over 14″ CTVs for £99, fridges fro under £100 (more than a decade ago) and a host of others and, still we’re here.
Thing is all these daft offers are just publicity stunts, they won’t and can’t last. It’s basically a loss leader to gain footfall in store. the problem is that people get it in their heads that this is a realistic and sustainable pricing level.
The laugh is that, whether they realise it or not, it’s likely going to cost them more than the RSP to dispose of the units at end of life, especially when IPR kicks in around 2012.

Oh prepare for more of these sorts of shenanigans as the supermarkets and a couple of others have discovered China.
They buy rubbish from them and send rubbish back again.
Don’t ask me why, it’s a crazy world at times, it really is.

IPR = Individual Producer Responsibility
Where the manufacturer or brand owner is responsible for the treatment of their own waste at end of life basically.
It is also the bullet that they all dodged as none are responsible for the appliances that are out there really as any producers responsibility is based on current sales figures. So, the more you sell the more you pay.
But, for the likes of Hotpoint machines nobody is responsible as they class that as “Historic WEEE” and before 2005 IIRC if you bought the brand or the brand owner at that time no longer exists no-one takes ownership. So Indesit dodged that one as well as others.
The manufacturers, from what I understand it, told the EU that they can’t do IPR, where they are responsible for their own waste, as they can’t count up how many of their boxes go to landfill. So currently they are only responsible for the tonnage that they put into the market, not the amount of machines that are actually scrapped by brand.
The EU want IPR it was part of the original WEEE Directive and, obviously, most traditional manufacturers don’t want it, or should I say the mass market manufacturers don’t want it as they then have to pay the true cost of early failure.
I’d bet my boots that they fight it tooth and nail as well. 😉
