How do you change the brushes on Bosch Logixx 8 WAS32466GB/10?

I have the above model and wish to change the brushes, as I am hearing a little of sparking (arcing?) during the final spin at 1600rpm. I can sometimes hear the same sparking noise when it is spinning a full load at high speed as the machine reaches full speed.

I did try to look as some people say there is no need to remove the motor. I took the top and rear panels off to get a look at the motor.

Looking from the back, it seems to remove the main connector to the motor access from the front would be needed. I can’t gain access from underneath as there appears to be a bottom metal panel also.

It seems I would need to remove the belt, undo the two bolts holding the motor and remove the motor before I could remove the connector.

I am very weary of removing the motor without removing the connector, in case I get a shock from any electrical charge built up in any large capacitors. I am also keen to learn and avoid engineer’s fees at the same time – within the reasons of safety, of course.

I would appreciate any advice, photos, tips, etc.

    Many thanks!

I’d always personally take the motor out to inspect it and clean the comm while I’m there but I appreciate a lot of people don’t.

That said the carbons are here in two flavours, one cheap, one not so cheap with little difference between them:

    http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/154740-b … on-brushes

The second link has a video courtesy of P45 on how to change the carbons.

By the looks of that, I’d take the motor out and after the plug is pulled from the mains and the plug from the motor, there’s little danger beyond tearing fingers getting to where you want to be. It’s just easier to work on that way IMO, specially so for a novice.

If you’re not sure though get an engineer to do it for you, it shouldn’t be too expensive if you use one of the independents from the Engineer Search, here:

Many thanks, kwatt, for taking the time to reply – much appreciated!

I was advised that there was little difference in quality between those two brushes. I believe the main thing to look out for is if the brushes are laminated or not – the Β£9.80 brushes don’t specifically say they are laminated, just “nearly all our brushes are laminated”. To me that means there is a small chance they may not be, but that’s a small disclaimer just in case.

I will leave the machine unplugged for a good day to minimise any electrical shocks. Perhaps there is no need to do so, but I am very weary of electrics. To stop my hands getting dirty, I plan to use a thin pair of rubber gloves – hopefully these may further reduce the chance of electric shock…hopefully!

To be honest, if working with electricity worries you that much, link number three is the one for you.

It would be correct to assume that manufacturers genuine replacement brushes these days are of the laminated (i.e. electrographitic composite) type. Often the grade reference number is stamped on the side, typically 39 or N39 but that’s not always the case hence the confusion. Cheap pattern brushes by definition could well be anything but laminated though it is almost impossible to tell. The only true test being how quickly they wear through use. Both types are fit for purpose and the choice left to the individual.

Regarding accessing the motor of your machine, to do that the baseplate will need removing. Easy enough access from underneath you will find. And those gloves of yours handy protecting you from those very sharp edges! πŸ˜‰

Re: How to change brushes on Bosch Logixx 8 ?

Okay I decided not to risk doing it myself, so paid somebody to put them in for me. It’s a little sparky on spin for now but the engineer told me that would go as the brushes wear in.

What is more concerning is on test mode, as the machine spools up to 1600rpm, at about 1000-1200rpm the machine makes a little juddering noise. I then noticed that the machine was letting water in. After questioning the engineer, I was told that it’s leakage from the sparking of the motor triggering the machine’s solenoids. As per their advice, I am running a full wash to help bed the brushes in and the problem should be gone.

I need opinions here, I am worried to death that the installation of these brushes have buggered up my machine. πŸ™

I would not have thought that the brushes could have caused that on any machine but I’ve little experience on those machines, Martin knows more about them but he’s on holiday just now. Some of the other guys may have more info though.

That’s exactly what the engineer told me and I felt as though he thought I was trying it on. But it did a wash and 1600 spin earlier this afternoon and it certainly didn’t do that until he put the brushes in.

Forgot to update. When spinning on the first rinse, water appeared more and more as the speed increased. Then the noise started to go and the water stopped coming in.

Weird one, but all seems to be well now.

If the commutator is thoroughly cleaned prior to replacing the brushes then you shouldn’t get any problems

It the commutator is thoroughly cleaned you shouldn’t have any problems. I never fit them without

I may be on holiday but still have my iPad and plenty of free time. πŸ˜€

Excessive arcing will indeed cause spurious things to happen like the valve solenoid opening. The motor does need taking apart and cleaning thoroughly by the sound of it. Ideally the commutator needs ‘bedding stick’ treatment too. Expecting the brushes to simply “bed in” will not happen in excessive cases such as yours. Doing so will only compound the issue rendering the motor useless in very short order. Then again it could be we worn out anyway even before the brushes were replaced. πŸ™

Re: How to change brushes on Bosch Logixx 8 ?

If I were to clean the motor with compressed air, would that help?

The machine appears to be working normally now, if anything reaching spin speeds a little faster than before the new brushes were put in.

I doubt the engineer will take my motor apart to clean it, especially as there doesn’t appear to be any reason to now. Is it something you could DIY?

What’s this ‘bedding stick’ treatment that you mention?

You can buy commutator sticks but would have to remove motor to do it properly

If the brushes have bedded in now no reason to upset it again.
Flat brush end is now curved to shape of commutator and will have cleaned the segments to shiny copper.
