I’m in Australia and my machine is an electrolux – sold under the name simpson here. a simpson aquarius 806 it’s called. I should imagine you’ve never heard of it in England.

Doesn’t matter. The principle will be the same. I need to replace the main bearing under the tub (I said it is a top loader, right?) and I’ve got the tub out and stripped of virtually everything. Agitator out. Only thing still hanging on is underneath a sort of cylinder containing a gearbox type thing – well, not gears, more like three cogwheels around a central one, more like a differential I guess.

It looks like it should come out from the inside. I’ve backed off the allen key screws holding the shaft tight and I’ve pounded on the end of the shaft a bit but to no avail.

I can’t find much help about anywhere, anywhere at all. What little I’ve found seems to suggest things like hammer and chisel for getting bearings out. And our local simpson rep says when they get to this stage – main bearing hard to get out – they just give up!!!

It’s been leaking from that bearing for the last couple of months.

Are there any practical servicemen visiting this forum who can give me chapter and verse on this job?

    regards,

    ab 🙂

They’re the experts who would know after all 😉

Likely as not the bearing/bearings will be rusted in good and proper, the rusty crud around the bearings almost welding it to the shaft with the corrosion created. It will certainly need loads of WD40 (penetrating oil) spraying on and around the troubled vacinity, then leaving 24 hrs or more to soak in first.

Beyond that I cannot advise (not having seen a Simpson?) but it seems more than just a challenge you have there! 😕

The next step is to pull the gearbox out from under the bowl, most likely what will happen is that the gearbox will pull out, but leave the upper shaft stuck in the bearing meaning you will then need to replace the gearbox as well.

Gearbox for this model is should retail at about $160-180, bearing & seal around $30. To avoid getting the gearbox out (very hard without a special puller), the top bracket can be replaced for about $35

The reason that your local service guys don’t go this far is that service call & labour charges would add $150-200 making the job not worth doing.
