I’ve just got a classic Hotpoint for my collection but the left damper has failed in some way so that the drum is awkward in the machine. I hope it hasn’t broken anything. I found the machine and thought I’d tackle it since its sound elsewhere. Just needs a door and a clean. I stripped a WM52 recently and I could swap the dampers out. How do I fit the replacement dampers?

Simply remove the 13mm nuts holding both ends. The damper cylinder can be withdrawn from the rod first to make it easier to then remove the rod from the tub mount. The latter more tricky to access though.

    Thanks Martin,

Fixed that, basically the previous owner had overloaded it and it jumped off the left shock, both aren’t failed (did the car shock test) so the machine is ok now thanks to you. There was one tiny crack in the baseplate near the right shock but by making a plate and bolting that on saves it from making it worse (not that the machine will be used at capacity as I prefer half to 3/4 loads in these classic machines, that and the fact that I have a wooden floor that springs). I’m so happy with this machine. I just have to clean up and refit everything.

HOWEVER; The pecker and cable must have came off with previous event so how does that fit onto the motor? How is it possible to take out brushes with the motor still fitted too?

The pecker held on to the motor end frame (adjacent the pulley)with a spring steel clip. Both the pecker unit and the brushes can easily be changed in situ. But perhaps easier for the novice to unbolt the motor from the tub allowing greater access. 😉
