KeymasterA more “economist” view of how washing machines affect the world and some of the environmental effects around them.
Interesting thoughts.

Did you all spot the error in his talk though? 😉
There’s a fundamental assumption that is incorrect IMO which actually destroys a good bit of the argument.
I will admit, it’s not obvious and it’s one of those “economics” things. So, it may well not be that easy to spot for a casual observer.

Good ’cause I went back and altered some so you could see what I’d done. One at least was yours for a football thing removed due to copyright issues. 😕
I’ll buy the person that finds the error a drink at the next meet, in fact I may even make that two but all bets are off if you all give up and I have to explain it.

well the obvious thing is, guessing that guy is a little older than me, when he was 4 its unlikely his mother had a front loader with a start button and that they could all sit around and watch and later, when bored of watching, she then had all the time for reading the kids books etc. More likely she was standing there for hours humping heavy washing from one tub to the other……maybe I am just being pedantic though.
not an economic reason I know and i really cannot be bothered to go researching all the figures.March 30, 2011 at 7:55 am #348037kwatt

Is it the assumption that developing nations will have both population growth AND increasing standards of living, when it’s more likely population will grow but they’ll be fighting over increasingly scarce resources, with no impact on overall energy consumption?

We also need to consider that a washing machine requires water… The world social services types are finding it hard enough to get water to some of these people to drink atm, never mind water for washing machines.

That’s because we have too many people and not enough resources for them all but, not he problem I was thinking on. 😉
