Hygena AHY 8101/2 Leak

Hi,
Got a 5 year old Hygena AHY 8101/2 bog standard dishwasher that has just started to leak out of the bottom of the door (LHS when looking at the front). Checked the door seals and they seem fine. Read loads of messages on the forum for hints, and have checked it for blockages and nipped pipes, again all seems ok. Found a wiring diagram by the mechanical timer and think the unit is over filling. The leak only starts when the washer gets to about step 12 (cycling and heating), at this point the timer does not seem to step on as if its waiting for a signal (temp/full?)

Last thing i’ve checked is the pressure switch which (from the diagram) looks as if one of its contacts activates the drain valve. Could this be the problem ? Is it over filling and not stepping the timer on ? Tested resistance between terminals on pressure switch and looks a bit iffy, sometimes reading 0 ohms when full, sometimes 200ohms ??

First thing to do is to get the bottom door seal area cleaned out – scouring pad along the bottom of the door is the main place to start – you will be astonished how much crud comes out.

Next (you can cross refer to the infamous “E2” fault), is to clear out the bottom transfer pipe – lift out all the filters and effectively rod out the drains! You will find several openings off the sump moulding. Some people poke them through with something like a tie rap or a fine bottle brush. Again, you’ll be astonished at the crud that comes out.

Do nothing without pulling the plug first, if you’re not confident in your abilities check the Directories section for a UKW engineer in your area.

This is a Brandt made one, the E2 error stuff doesn’t apply to this one I’m afraid.

Almost certainly the lower spray arm has a split along it’s seam which will need replacing. Because of this the water circulation will have been reduced causing the overheat thermostat to cut out, which in turn will stop the programme advancing.

This is manually resettable but not easy to get at, as you’ve obviously had a good look inside, the stat has a button on it that needs pressing.

Bottom door seal is clean, will check the outlet pipes from the sump. The water is getting hot, found the stat (red button on top) which didn’t need resetting. What is causing the timer to not step on ? Is this waiting for a signal from the pressure switch (ie full or empty?)

Isn’t there some sort of door seal issue with Brandt dishwashers? Conversion kit or something?

Steve, the dishwasher uses static heat (ie the timer is stoppped) to temperature. The timer should restart when the thermostat reaches 65c, so may not be receiving the signal. This suggests a faulty stat, broken wiring or possibly faulty timer. Starting to get a bit complex – may well be engineer time.

You’re the man!!!!!!
Bottom spray arm is split – please give me a price on a new one.
But havent resolved the timer stall problem. I tried taping the spray arm up to get the washer to heat up to temp, but have to keep knocking it off when it leaks because the tape comes off!!!!! So don’t know if it’s getting hot enough.
I can only find the safety stat on my washer, although the wiring diag shows others (as options – different wash temps ??). If there is another stat, where is it and can it be easily tested (jug of hot water like the old car stats??)

They may well be on the inside of the door. They can be tested by gentle heat. Be very careful if you do strip the door, the stainless steel inner panel’s edges are honed to lethal sharpness!

Steve, check the little tower piece that the spray arm fits to as well as these hae a tendency to break/wear as well on that range.

Apart from that Dave should be able to tell you more in the morning.

Thanks, I will check the door again although I have had this thing in bits that many times, I dont remember seing a stat. The safety stat is a dual unit with 4 connections (73 & 90 degrees) the drawing also shows a 60 deg stat, this is the one I assume allows the timer to restart.
