ParticipantHi,
Don’t think anyone has asked this exact question, but please point me in the right direction if they have….
I have a quite old (10 years ?) Hygena APL8224/3 that doesn’t fill at all with water, but just makes a humming noise. This seems to be coming from the fill solenoid/valve, and I reckon I just need to replace this (if I squeeze the black tube, water gets pushed around in the ‘filler matrix’ thingy, so I don’t think that’s blocked).
Anyone got an opinion ? Where can I get one at a good price ?
I have the thing in pieces, and have removed the solenoid – what is the diaphragm with the magnet supposed to do (just for interest) ?
Thanks in advance,
Nic

Er, you might have been a bit too clever there, Nic. If it hums, the solenoid is opening the valve – therefore, you have a restriction somewhere else. Crushed/nipped/trapped/collapsed fill hose; choked self bore tap are all good bets. Unlikely to be the machine itself.
The valve operates by the light spring holding down the bolt on the rubber pad, as well as the incoming water pressure. When the solenoid is energised, the bolt is lifted away and water (when present) rushes through the hole in the centre. Beautifully simple, especially that the valve is closed water pressure.

Hi Penguin,
Thanks for your suggestions – thought I’d update you on my progress !
I thought that I should check the water supply as you suggested before buying a new solenoid, and it was fine – however, I then connected the solenoid back up again and it started working ! The effect of me taking it to pieces and generally knocking it around (and potentially cleaning the contacts, though I can’t believe it was that) seems to have ‘fixed’ it.
I still have a slight problem though – the element gets very hot (lots of steam, smells hot) as if not enough water is being splashed onto it, and there doesn’t seem to be much water in the dishwasher. How is the water metering done – is there a level switch ?
Cheers,
Nic

If I recall these used to block the lower hose from side chamber to sump, causing no fill/under filling hence element on with not enough water and risk of FIRE!
If you are not able to fix this call someone who can before it gets worse.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your suggestion – I finally got round to taking it all to bits today (couldn’t really do it over Christmas !), and you were right – lower hose was blocked with the most disgusting slime you could imagine.
It looks like what was happening was that the ‘filler matrix’ (left hand side of machine) was not functioning properly as a consequence: the water in the float chamber, that operates the ‘stop filling now’ microswitch, was not emptying, and so hardly any water was going into the machine because the microswitch was either always closed or very close to being closed from the beginning.
All works fine now, so thanks guys for your help !
