Comparing like for like with Zanussi ZDC8202P @ £249 and Zanussi Heat Pump Condenser Tumble Drier ZDH8333PZ @ £399 still a 25year difference. Sorry to be a tad pedantic but I originally had a scientific background and am very distrustful of corporate claims. However the flaw in my argument is that I’m still using the figures from the Hoover drier and extrapolating from that. It would be interesting to get the figures for like to like. This is what the likes of ‘Which’ should be doing.

The energy labels specify typical running costs (in kWh) based on the standard european tests. Yes, manufacturers publish these test results, and they will do all they can to minimise the results, but are they really going to lie?
While these tests may not fully reflect the real world use (much like the standard mpg figures for cars), I’d wager that they are a lot more stringent and reliable than the one off test done by Twicknix and should provide a reasonable basis for comparison.
I believe Which also measure running costs as part of their assessments, but they obviously only cover a small fraction of the market.

Look who regulates it Tim and who carries out the tests.
The last batch tested by DEFRA (IIRC) was 27 models, the vast bulk of which did not meet the published energy ratings.

So at what stage will we see junk piles of BER heat pump dryers stacked alongside fridges at the recycling plants?

Fridges are not easily recycled due to the insulation so the heat pump dryers don’t have the insulation which I guess go down the same route as washing machines. Perhaps it might worth more in scrap against washing machine?

The heat pump dryers may not have the insulation as you say, but what they do still have is the oil in the compressor, which is still classed as a contaminant ..
Nevertheless, I don’t suppose anyone will be able to recognise the difference between a heat pump dryer and a standard condenser dryer

More especially guys going to a service call thinking it’s a regular condenser dryer and searching in vain for the element. 🙂
