About a year ago had a guy i went to told me what i needed, i already had the part in my pocket i thought i might need ‘ i asked how he knew said got info from the net and decided he didnt have the skills to tackle it after his wife warned him off, called us out so it seems some people do realise when it is beyond them, i can only assume he got info from this site.

Ah Bryan, what to do…… Shut the Public Forums? Leave them open and answer everything “Get an engineer”? Or should we take what we can get from the Forums? Ken’s post is very informative. Basically, we give some information and allow them to make a decision – plenty of uptake on Repairs@, some spares sales and a few idiots who need to be kept safe from themselves. I don’t see that we can do much more.
It’s probably much more important that we are seen to be professional in what we are doing. Safe and professional, working within limits which we will (and do) moderate.
I posted Loci’s closer as it really is rather pleasant to get some genuine feedback. We aren’t going to win them all, but, hey, it happens everyday on the office phone.
I LOVE the idea of you and Goatboy having your own forum – call it “Take a chance” and let them do just that! Be brutally honest, name and shame – it could be a stunning alternative to the Trade side’s “Off Topic”. If Admin buy it of course….. 😀
Cheers,

I fully understand and agree with the points Ken and yourself have made and I know we`ve discussed it before and not much more can really be done. I was simply agreeing with Goatboy on how the public at times can wear you down.
Getting back on topic I`ve re-read loki`s original post and although he`s obviously a decent bloke I think he earns his place in this thread as he ended up replacing the thermostat , lower element and selector switch when he could have called an Engineer and probably saved himself a few quid :).

The public wearing you down… never! 😉 😆
TBH I see this sort of thing all the time on mailing lists and forums. There’s always those that will take the Mick, you just have to live with it. And, to be fair, it’s the same sort that phone up looking for a fault diagnosis over the phone, we get them every day. 🙄
And you’re quite right Bryan, it probably did cost the guy more in the end rather then following the advice given in the first place and I’ve seen that a fair old bit too. On many occasions that is gratification enough. 😈

Andy, don’t take this the wrong way but the area (by postcode) you cover is very small and has a low population (head/sq mile) in relation to the UK as a whole.
Having operated in the rural regions of Devon for many years, most of the (yours probably) customers will be loyal to who they know and have no need to seek other repairers as they will already be more than happy with those that they know already 😀
