Thanks n20, there’s also http://www.gas-news.co.uk/ who are also not exactly best pleased with CORGI either. 😕

I wonder how long it will be before the general public twig to what they intend?

Re: If you are Corgi Registered…

Just something to think about here. 😯

If a company (CORGI) issues a certificate stating that a peice of equipment has been installed correctly and is safe to use without inspecting the equipment.
And then the customer has a fire due to a gas leak due to inadequate installation.

Then would’nt that make that company (CORGI) fully liable in a court of law for all damages as they have issued legal documents stating that it is a correct nd safe installation. (even though they have never even seen the installation). 😕

If this is the case then what will happen when a customer installs the appliance themselves, will this situation then void the customers warranty as it could end up that the customer would have to show this certificate to the engineer to obtain repairs under warranty which in my opinion would be a good thing, how many times have you been out to a sub standardly installed appiance or unsafe appliance.:?

All installation handbooks state that the appliance MUST be fitted by a compident person.

In the eyes of the law only Corgi registered persons are compident. 😕

There is another point to make concerning Corgi making contact with your customer who you have just installed an appliance for.

    Under the data protection act.
Will CORGI allowed to contact that customer direct as my understanding is that a third party company cannot use the information that another company has given them as they have no direct relationship or contract
    with that person.

I now this was long winded but I thought it was worth asking the questions.

The declaration of safety that Corgi propose sending to the homeowner can only confirm that the installation was carried out by an RGI. The rest of it will be padded out with waffle. The existing CORGI ID card, CP1, completed Benchmark Log Book, detailed invoice or a phone call to Corgi (for the ultra cautious) already performs this task, but without the additional costs to the consumer and financial benefits to Corgi.

I can’t see it making any difference to the terms and conditions of the manufacturer’s warranty, after all the introduction of the Benchmark Log Book hasn’t. The MI may state “The details of the Log Book will be required in the event of any warranty work”, but is this the case in the real world. No new laws or existing laws are being introduced or changed. In a high handed manner Corgi are adopting a cough up the money or get out of the industry attitude.

Installation and Servicing Instructions (MI) state “The installation must be carried out by a CORGI registered Installer or other competent person…”. Corgi Registered Gas Installers have to prove their competence every five years by training for and passing their ACS or again get out of the industry. How do these “other competent persons” prove their competence? This is another grey area that Corgi should be tackling before they get another knife out and aim it in the direction of the RGI.

I don’t know the ins and outs of the Data Protection Act, but I can’t see Corgi wanting all the hassle of arranging for work inspections directly with the householders. I suspect they will send a letter to the RGI stating that on a certain time & date they will require access to the three installations shown herein, it is your responsibility to make the necessary arrangements with your customers and send us confirmation within fourteen days.

If you want some better answers try posting some questions on the forums at http://www.argi.org.uk and spread the word about the Association of Registered Gas Installers.

Thanks for the information. It’s a very sophisticated and impressive site.

BTW is it possible for us RGI’s to access the trade forums?

Thanks for the comment n2o, I like the site and others seem to as well.

On that subject of forum access I’m having a few thoughts and I’ll get back to you later this evening or tomorrow on it once I get a bit of peace and quiet.
