Hi – the ignition on my my Rangemaster Classic 90 was stuck on permanently. I cleaned the whole thing which didn’t help but after investigating by taking the front panel off, discovered that the spark switch was faulty. The spring had popped out of the back, so I ordered a new one and replaced it. The permenant clicking has gone, but now there is another problem. When I turn on the gas oven, the auto ignition sparks automatically as it should and then shuts down as soon as the flame ignites. However as soon as the big flame kicks in, the ignition comes on, and stays on! I have looked for trapped food, loose parts, and anything obvious but can’t see anything unusual. My guess is that the thermocouple needs replacing. Any ideas very welcome. Thanks

well i can say it has nothing to do with the thermo couple. if that fails the flame will go out

the ignition unit detects the flame is lit using the ignition spark electrode. as long as the burner jets are not blocked around this probe it should work

i have no experience with gas but it does seem odd that its ok till the flame failure device raises the flame. It could be the unit needs a service by a gas safe engineer to clean the jets and the burner. it does sound a bit like the flame is not burning correctly or the ignition unit has failed

either way it needs checking for safety
also make sure you have a working CO detector

Thanks for the swift reply Dave. I guess maybe it’s time to call someone in. Do you think it might be worth just replacing the ignition unit? They’re £35… probably the enineer will try this anyway?

you could try changing if you like but it could do with being checked in case its not burning correctly which is why i mentioned the CO detector
