ParticipantI have a problem with my Ikea Whirpool DWF 417 dishwasher. There is other posting on the forums with similiar problems. The dish washer all of a sudden has stopped working part way through the wash cycle. It has two wash options of rapid and eco which both do the same now. The rinse cycle works fines, dishes are rinsed and water is removed from the machine.
I don’t know much about dish washers but I would guess the first part of wash cycle is to rinse the dishes first. The dish washer runs for about 20 minutes and comes to a stage where it attempts to start a new process and after about two seconds of a standard action noice it stops and the beeps with a fault. This dishwasher then attempts again to start again but stops again with the same beep. This continues for some time until I have to select the rinse cycle to finish it off. At this point to dishwasher has released the tablets and the plates appear to be clean and dirty water is located at the bottom.
I’ve taken the dishwasher apart and it’s not obvious which component is the water resivour as suggested in other postings. When I had taken the unit apart the white chamber at the bottom is full of a brown sludge. Not sure what this is for?
Any ideas anyone?

White chamber is the water softener, leave well alone ❗
If the appliance if “dropping” the tablet then it should start to heat, is it?
If it is leaving dirty water after it has heated then you may have a drain/pump problem but check the drain hose first this may be connected to the sink bend? if so take it it off and check for a blockage at that point. 😉July 14, 2009 at 8:48 pm #291979banyan36b

Thanks for the feedback and comments. 😀
The applicance runs for about 20 minutes or more at which point the tablet has been released and seems to have disolved. The dirty water is boiling hot at the bottom of the unit and the dishes seem to be clean. The waste hose looks fine and once I reset the washer and select the rinse program the water is removed.
When I had it apart I didn’t take the hoses off as it wasn’t to obvious how to remove the base plate. I wasn’t sure if there is any filters in the base somewhere. The only thing I could see was the brown sludge in the white box. Could this be blocked?
When the error orginally appeared I looked at the lights on the display and noticed the salt light. reading the virtually useless whirpool manual it said the salt container needs filling up. We have never put salt in before as I thought the tablets included the salt and rinse aid. Adding the salt didn’t do anything and now the rinse aid light is on. I think this is a red herring to be honest.
Any ideas?

There are three versions of this appliance – 1 made by Bosch and 2 made by SMEG……… Need the 12nc number to identify what you’ve got.
In the meantime……… Don’t touch the regeneration unit – the sludge is the softener resin.

You’ve got a SMEG-built one, and you haven’t got a “logical” fault. A read of this article may prove informative, if not exactly helpful.

Thanks, but it looks like I’ll need to purchase a new dishwasher.
