Imperial Fridge problem

Hello, Can anyone help with this please? I’ve an Imperial branded built-in fridge about 16 years old. Were these made by Liebherr? Since a couple of days ago, the comp motor runs for about 20secs and then trips during which time it creates the very slightest of temperature differential at the pipework adjacent to the compressor. I’m guessing the trip is thermal overload and the refrigerant vanished somehow. Would that likely be correct? Would a re-gas be a likely fix? Is it worth fixing? It’s otherwise perfectly fine and I have no other reason or wish to change it. Thanks.

sorry but your unit will require a new compressor as this is what has failed.

cost of a new compressor will be approx £160 fitted or there abouts dependant on where you live.

have a look in repairs@ and they should be able to give you a better idea of cost.

Hi all,
Well, I had the compressor replaced by a helpful chap (the figure of £160 was spot on) but now I find that the fridge does not cool as well as it used to. Using the same t/stat setting as before (6) I can get about I’m seeing temperatures of around +4 – +8C on the bottom shelf, whereas before this would be around freezing to +4C (it would freeze produce adjacent to the back). At this setting the compressor is running for quite a long time and if I turn it up a tad more (say, 6.5) the compressor seems to run continuously, excepting defrost periods of course, without pulling the average temperature down much more. The other thing is it seems to defrost far more often. I’ve never timed this accurately but I thought it previously defrosted after a few days (or even once a week), now it seems to do so several times a day. When I go near it now it seems either to be running, or defrosting. It did seem to cool a tad better just after the new compressor was fitted, but that could be just my imagination. Would anyone care to comment? I don’t want to call the engineer back unnecessarily.

P.S. Model info:- Imperial KIL170/4 = xref = Liebherr KI 1830-1 (appx. 5 cu. ft. / 150 ltrs). Old comp. Aspera using R12, replaced with Embraco EM40 comp. charged with what looks to be Isceon 49 (R413A).

I think it may be best if you did to be honest, it sounds like there may be a small problem there.

The defrost cycles won’t have been effected by the compressor change though, that should happen normally two or three times a day.
