I normally stock Electruepart CBN9208 which covers quite a few Indesco motors, although you often have to use the original plastic holder, as they do differ. Does anyone know of an equivalent pattern brush but with the opposite angle on the carbon? This would do for earlier Merloni machines and also the metal holder should fit in Beko plastic holders, thus rationalising the spares held. At one time I used to buy loose Bosch carbons and solder them in old Indesco holders but it is a bit time consuming.

    Homespare will have them.

Indeed, as it happens I have ordered a set of 5409 and a set of 5416 this morning but at £7.40 a set they are rather expensive (I pay £6.00 for the CBN9208).

Qualtex CAR73 at around £6.00 is a suitable alternative 😀

TBH the art of cobbling brushes to fit a brush housing is not the greatest technique and is best avoided. Carbon brush compounds vary from make to make, model to model. Whilst they may look the same size are not the same match and can result in short term motor failure. 😯

For example : ‘Cobbling’ those loose Bosch type (pattern) carbons onto the older style Bosch motor end housing is a classic example of such a questionably bad practice. Soldering copper tails onto formerly electric spot welded factory jigged brush end housings is a nonsense in the extreme and well best avoided IMHO.

Martin, do you really think Qualtex or any of the other pattern brush suppliers are bothered about providing different grades of carbon for different makes of motor? The fact that the same metal holders fit into a range of different plastic casings indicates to me that that the manufacturers are doing on a large scale much the same as I do on a small scale. The Bosch machines you mention are mostly getting quite elderly now so could well be judged BER if a new end housing is required but the soldered in carbons would be within most customers budget. The only complaints I’ve had with pattern brushes etc were some years ago on the Hotpoint GEC type motor. The plastic casings of the pattern brushes were melting, so I’ve only used genuine Hotpoint brushes on that motor since then.

In support of Qualtex, Masterpart , Homespare or whoever, I can say that there are at least 10 to 15 different grades of electro-graphite carbon brushes that are used in domestic electrical appliances these days. All of which are graded toward their effective use therefore caution should be adopted when choosing a suitable replacement. 😉
