ParticipantI have an Indesit washing machine that has gone wrong about 8 times.
I have extended warranty.
How long do I have to suffer this faulty machine?
On Sunday the machine got stuck on the same cycle for over 2 hours before we noticed it. I unplugged it.
I phoned Indesit the next day and a fitter was booked for today (Thursday).
Our work clothes were in the machine, obviously soaking wet. I removed the filter, flooded the kitchen and removed the clothes.
Fitter came out today and tested the machine (Took about 3 minutes) and said ” the mainboard is confused” if it happens again turn off the power for a couple of hours, then try it again! He then went on his way.
My Wife put some washing in the machine and after 2 hours, it had not finished.
Must be confused again! The fitter had not pulled the machine out and could not test it within 3 minutes.
I phoned again and now have to wait for that same fitter to call again (On Monday).
I am not a washing machine fitter but I noticed a black object on the floor behind the machine.
After getting a wire coat hanger, I dragged the object out.
It is a rubber belt with number EL 1046 H8.I have looked for this under Indesit spares and found it to be a drive belt.
Could this be the fault and if so, should a fitter have found this fault? Can I demand a new machine?
Should I allow the same fitter in my house? All the best

I seem to remember a TV programme called ‘Stig of the Dump’ if that doesn’t give you a clue then nothing will. 😥 You have a budget priced machine with budget quality. Have pity on the poor soul who has to try and repair it for you.
It may only need a new belt this time, the stretchy belts do come adrift and a new belt is the only cure.If and when you come to replace this machine. pay a little more for something of better qualtiy, the old adage ‘you only get what you pay for’ is very apposite in this case. 😥

Hi
The belt might have come off but that would not cause your problem if the motor is still turning. He should have at least pulled machine out and connected his laptop to machine. The boards dont get confused; they either work or dont work. I work as engineer for Indesit and wouldn’t dream of telling a customer the machine was confused.February 2, 2007 at 6:34 pm #203024stig

I have now checked the machine and found it has a belt fitted.
The belt that I found behind the machine was obviously left by one of the other fitters, after fitting the new motor or the new bearing (2 bearings have been fitted).I have never heard of a confused washing machine before.

Hi Jim
This machine is insured up to 2009.
Should we throw the machine away with the insurance and start again?
If a washing machine is sold in a well known shop, brand new with insurance offered should we only buy it if the price is over say £400.00?I feel that if it is offered for sale brand new it should last a couple of years even if the price is as you say, low.
We have had Indesit machines before (without insurance) and I just needed to change the brushes from time to time, and they lasted very well and never needed any other work.
Our last machine was a very expensive one (Top brand) that lasted just over the year and that is why we looked for another Indesit.Too many people say “You get what you pay for”.
I say “whatever you pay, you should get good value”Stig

If it is insured up until 2009 then you may as well stick with it, some years ago Indesit machines had a reputation for being cheap and cheerful, very basic, inexpensive parts etc. Sadly that has not been the case for some time now. The electronics in these machines are more complex than they need to be but are also very unreliable and expensive at the same time. I would be interested to know what the ‘top brand’ machine was that you refer to. Also when you say, a ‘well known shop’ I take you mean what we in the trade call the sheds. 😥 Very few independent dealers will sell Indesit appliances these days, unlike the sheds they are really interested in their customers, the sheds make more money from stitching you up with the insurance contract than they do from selling you the machine.
You only need to enter Indesit, Ariston or Hotpoint in this forums search facility to see what I mean. 😥
Unlike more ‘recent’ technologies such as PC’s, DVD’s VCR’s and the like that inevitably come down in price when R & D costs are absorbed, the humble washing machine is still a drum, motor, heater, pump, control system, hoses and a few other bits & bobs. Likewise your car is still an internal combustion engine, a gearbox and a wheel at each corner.
They are both basically ‘old’ technology that you can tweak about a little.25 years ago a good quality washer would have cost between £200 & £300, the average family car say £3500 to £4000. Fast forward to today and you can buy a washer for less than £190, what price your average family car?
It is no coincidence that the cheap washing machines are now very unreliable, poorly constructed, throw away junk, whilst the quality of your average car has never been better.
